Location: Based out of our Austin, TX office and requires in-office presence three days a week.

Position Summary:

This position is ideal for software engineers and architects looking to expand into the security domain. We're seeking someone with strong distributed systems and enterprise software development experience who can learn our networking and security domain through team collaboration and mentoring. This role combines deep software architecture challenges with the opportunity to shape next-generation enterprise security platforms used by global organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Own and evolve the end-to-end software architecture of a distributed secure access platform spanning customer-deployed agents and connectors, and cloud-hosted relay and management (SaaS) components.

  • Define architectural direction and guardrails to ensure scalability, high availability, regional failover, performance, and long-term evolvability of enterprise software systems.

  • Design software architectures that enable a small number of semi-autonomous software development teams to deliver independently, without excessive coordination overhead.

  • Make and guide system-wide software architectural decisions, including protocol selection (e.g., transport, multiplexing, RPC), based on performance, reliability, and maintainability tradeoffs.

  • Produce and maintain software architecture artifacts such as design documents, diagrams, tradeoff analyses, and reference implementations.

  • Review and approve software designs across multiple development teams, providing clear, actionable feedback.

  • Mentor and coach software engineers on distributed systems design, architectural tradeoffs, and pragmatic decision-making.

  • Collaborate with product management, customers, field engineering, and security researchers to shape software designs and propose integration approaches for secure access to internal and internet-facing resources.

  • Occasionally implement prototypes or targeted production code to validate designs or unblock teams.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of hands-on software development experience with enterprise software platforms.

  • Significant experience designing and evolving large-scale distributed software systems with ownership of architectural decisions.

  • Strong software architecture and system design capabilities with proven track record in enterprise environments.

  • Experience with modern programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, or C++.

  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, including protocol tradeoffs relevant to hybrid on-prem and cloud systems.

  • Experience selecting and applying existing protocols and technologies in production software environments.

  • Proven ability to reason about scalability, latency, performance budgets, consistency, and failure modes in software systems.

  • Experience designing software architectures that enable multiple semi-autonomous teams to deliver independently.

  • Experience designing and operating cloud-hosted, as-a-service software platforms, alongside on-prem components deployed in customer environments.

  • Familiarity with cloud environments, operating primarily in Azure with supporting components in other providers.

  • Familiarity with AI tools across the software development lifecycle, and the ability to collaborate effectively alongside such tools to enhance productivity and innovation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining software designs and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Software engineering leadership experience with ability to mentor development teams.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building network-centric access products such as gateways, proxies, or secure connectivity platforms.

  • Experience working on software systems that broker or mediate access between users, devices, and protected resources.

  • Experience operating and evolving long-lived software systems across multiple versions and deployment models.

  • API design and microservices architecture experience.

  • DevOps and Infrastructure as Code experience.

  • Authentication systems or access control software development experience.

  • General familiarity with security concepts relevant to networked, distributed systems.

What You'll Learn:

  • Zero Trust security architecture and networking domain expertise through team mentoring and collaboration.

  • Enterprise networking and secure access platform requirements and implementation patterns.

  • Network security concepts and protocols specific to secure access systems.

Technology Stack:

  • Programming Languages: Go, Java, Python, C++

  • Cloud Platforms: Azure (primary), AWS, multi-cloud deployments

  • Architecture: Microservices, distributed systems, RESTful APIs

  • Security: Zero Trust frameworks, authentication systems, access control

  • DevOps: Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and observability

  • Networking: Transport protocols, multiplexing

What Success Looks Like:

  • New software features integrate cleanly into the architecture without large-scale refactoring.

  • Development teams deliver quickly and independently within clear architectural boundaries.

  • The software system balances performance, reliability, and developer productivity over time.
