Job Summary
Performs carpentry repair and construction work on buildings and equipment; and does related work as required. This position requires moderate physical exertion.
Essential Functions
  • Builds and installs wood door frames, access panels, air vents, steps, laminated covered shelving cabinets, etc.
  • Prepares layout, marks cutting and assembly lines on materials.
  • Maintains inventory of tools.
  • Shapes materials to prescribed measurements.
  • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Erects framework for structures and lays sub flooring.
  • Builds stairs, lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
  • Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, and kick plates.
  • Replaces broken glass panels.
  • Repairs desks, tables, chairs, cabinets, and other office furniture.
  • Hangs doors and builds partitions.
  • Operates planers, jointers, power saws, and other woodworking equipment.
  • Constructs and repairs podiums, portable ticket booths, cabinets, doors, tables, and wooden bridges over electrical wiring.
  • Repairs stages and dance floors.
  • Builds easels and ramps.
  • Constructs offices and storage rooms using metal studs, dropped ceilings, etc.
  • Repairs portable concession stands.
  • Replace broken glass panels with plywood.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
AND
Experience: Four years of experience as a carpenter. Training courses in carpentry may be substituted for one year of experience.
OR
Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Non- supervisory experience or education may not be substituted for the required supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Journeyman skill in the trade
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, techniques, and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans, or sketches
  • Ability to direct and train helpers and others in the trade.
Additional Information
Background Check
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening, and must be successfully completed.
Probation
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
