Maintenance Technician

Full-Time | $18.40-$25.51

Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake is seeking a dependable and skilled Maintenance Technician to help keep our retail stores, donation centers, and recycling facilities safe, functional, and welcoming for employees, customers, and donors.

This position performs a variety of building maintenance and repair tasks, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and preventive maintenance. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, troubleshooting facility issues, and supporting multiple locations in a fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do

  • Perform routine and emergency repairs involving electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance
  • Complete preventive maintenance on facility equipment, HVAC components, doors, fixtures, and building systems
  • Identify maintenance issues through regular facility inspections and promptly resolve or report concerns
  • Assist with minor grounds maintenance, seasonal facility preparation, and snow removal as needed
  • Ensure facilities remain safe, clean, and operational for employees, customers, and donors
  • Identify potential safety hazards and assist with corrective actions
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Comply with hazardous material handling and workplace safety requirements
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, and service records
  • Order, organize, and track maintenance supplies, tools, and replacement parts
  • Maintain inventory levels to ensure efficient response to maintenance needs
  • Respond to maintenance requests from store and program staff in a timely manner
  • Communicate repair status and project updates clearly and professionally
  • Support operational needs across multiple locations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

What We're Looking For

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • One or more years of hands-on experience in:
    • Building maintenance
    • Electrical repair
    • Plumbing
    • Carpentry
    • HVAC maintenance
  • Experience supporting retail, warehouse, manufacturing, or nonprofit facilities preferred

Skills & Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of building systems and basic troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Customer-service mindset and professional communication skills
  • Basic computer skills for work orders, maintenance tracking, and reporting
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment

Physical Requirements

Medium Physical Demand

  • Lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel between Goodwill locations required
  • Travel may account for up to 90% of working time
  • Valid, unrestricted Maryland driver's license required

  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, changing weather conditions, wet or humid environments, and airborne particles
  • Moderate noise levels typical of retail, warehouse, and maintenance environments
