Primary Purpose of Position

A Principal Software Engineer, AI is a hands-on subject matter expert who is responsible for the overall software design of many components within systems and can lead the technical implementation of multiple initiatives. This role also will cover operational application production support of multiple systems across portfolios. The ideal candidate has experience working in a high paced environment and has strong knowledge of varying domains. This Principal Software Engineer, AI has strong technology skills ( Python, Data Bricks, Data Analytics), as well as packaged software design and implementation experience. Through close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including enterprise architects, solution architects, engineering, and business leaders, this role will drive the adoption of AI/ML solutions that deliver measurable business value. The ideal candidate brings a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and a proactive, inquisitive mindset to continuously improve and future-proof the organization's technology landscape.


Primary Duties and Accountabilities

  • Provide strategic AI/ML guidance to IT and business teams, aligning implementation with organizational goals and advising leadership on technology roadmaps and long-term planning.
  • Manage the intake, evaluation, and lifecycle of AI initiatives, from ideation through deployment.
  • Research, prototype, and evaluate emerging AI/ML technologies and methodologies to assess business value and drive innovation.
  • Collaborate with application owners to integrate AI/ML solutions into enterprise systems and workflows.
  • Contribute to digital transformation initiatives by enabling data-driven decision-making and optimizing business processes.
  • Mentor IT personnel and foster a culture of continuous learning and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Design and develop solutions to acquire data needed for AI/ML solutions.
  • Design and develop AI/ML solutions to enable business capabilities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or Business Administration
  • 10-years of experience delivering medium to large-scale software solutions, with 4-years focused on AI/ML
  • Experience working with and consulting stakeholders on understanding business needs, providing strategic direction and delivering impactful solutions
  • Expertise in designing and deploying AI/ML solutions using Microsoft technologies, Azure, and Databricks
  • Strong foundation in machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and data mining techniques
  • Proven experience with cloud-based AI/ML platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, and hands-on use of MLOps tools including MLflow, Kubeflow, or SageMaker
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages for data analysis (Python, R, Java, Julia, etc.)
  • Recognized subject matter expert in Generative AI, Machine Learning, or Data Science
  • Proven skill in data architecture, modeling, and solution implementation
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills, including verbal and written
  • Must be willing to travel 25%

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Advanced degree (MS or MBA) in AI, Data, Software Engineering, or a related field.  
  • Experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale LLM and generative AI applications.  
  • Proven ability to influence organization-wide technical strategy and architecture decisions.  
  • Experience with Responsible AI governance, risk management, and compliance practices.  
  • Experience working in enterprise environments leveraging modern engineering practices (e.g., Agile, platform-centric delivery models). 
  • Experience leading adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and establishing effective team practices for their responsible use in enterprise software delivery.
