Overview

The Superintendent (Safety & Damage Prevention) plays a critical leadership role in ensuring terminal and cargo-handling operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This role is responsible for strengthening operational discipline, reducing damages, and driving a culture of continuous improvement through strong field presence, data-driven decision making, and collaboration with leadership and the ILA workforce.

Responsibilities

What your day looks like as a Superintendent:

 

Safety Leadership & Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture and ensure all operations align with company SOPs and safety standards.
  • Conduct routine field observations to reinforce safe behaviors and identify risks.
  • Lead and support accident and incident investigations, ensuring timely reporting and corrective action.
  • Promote the belief that safety and operational quality are inseparable.

Operational Oversight & SOP Adherence

  • Review terminal operations to ensure compliance with SOPs and operational best practices.
  • Partner with leadership and frontline teams to maintain safe and efficient workflows.
  • Monitor daily operations to ensure consistent execution and performance.

Damage Prevention & Investigation

  • Investigate cargo, equipment, and operational damages to determine root causes.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track trends, analyze data, and lead initiatives to reduce incidents and improve performance.

Field Engagement

  • Maintain a strong presence in the field to lead by example.
  • Ensure proper PPE usage and reinforce safe behaviors and operational discipline.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and real-time feedback to the workforce.

Office Responsibilities

  • Document investigations and maintain accurate records.
  • Review operational data, KPIs, and performance metrics.
  • Participate in safety committees, planning meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • Experience in port operations, marine terminal or heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of safety practices, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and coaching skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and flexible schedules, including nights/weekends as needed.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a TWIC card
