MAJOR FUNCTION

ThisĀ isĀ responsibleĀ technicalĀ andĀ skilledĀ workĀ inĀ firefightingĀ and attendingĀ emergencyĀ medicalĀ technician (EMT) training includingĀ theĀ preservationĀ ofĀ lifeĀ andĀ protectionĀ ofĀ propertyĀ againstĀ fireĀ andĀ relatedĀ hazards in rendering out of hospital life support functions, other emergency care and rescue services. DutiesĀ includeĀ theĀ operationĀ andĀ maintenanceĀ ofĀ FireĀ RescueĀ DivisionĀ vehiclesĀ andĀ equipment.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property through firefighting andĀ rescue operations, usually under close supervision. Employees of this classĀ are also required to learn and participate in the operation of firefightingĀ equipment and apparatus. Although firefighting and emergency rescue, including the administration of emergency medical treatment, are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, aĀ majorĀ portion of time is spentĀ onĀ pre-fireĀ surveys;Ā training,Ā studyingĀ methods,Ā techniquesĀ andĀ organizationĀ ofĀ firefighting andĀ onĀ routineĀ dutiesĀ inĀ theĀ careĀ andĀ maintenanceĀ ofĀ FireĀ Rescue’sĀ propertyĀ andĀ equipment. Work involvesĀ an element of personal danger and requiresĀ working on extended shifts. Work is usually performed in accordance with explicit instructions and well-defined procedures; however, satisfactoryĀ performance of the workĀ requires initiative and a thorough individual understanding of the methods,Ā equipment and principles of firefighting,Ā fire prevention, and rescue and emergency medical techniques (i.e. CPR and controlled bleeding) in meeting a wide variety of emergencies.

RespondsĀ toĀ alarmsĀ ofĀ fireĀ orĀ otherĀ emergencies;Ā donsĀ personalĀ protectiveĀ equipment;Ā worksĀ in enclosed areas; lays and connects hoses; holdsĀ nozzlesĀ which direct water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment.

Responds to alarms of fire or otherĀ emergencies in commercial, residential and multiple story structures;Ā climbsĀ stairsĀ carryingĀ aĀ myriadĀ ofĀ firefightingĀ toolsĀ orĀ emergencyĀ medicalĀ equipment;Ā performs search and rescue techniquesĀ for locating buildingĀ occupants; operates and controls building fire suppression systems; operates building elevators under fire service control.

RespondsĀ toĀ alarmsĀ ofĀ fireĀ orĀ otherĀ emergenciesĀ oftenĀ performingĀ dutiesĀ forĀ anĀ extendedĀ period ofĀ timeĀ whileĀ wearingĀ self-containedĀ breathingĀ apparatusĀ inĀ highĀ temperaturesĀ andĀ withĀ limited vision.

VentilatesĀ structuresĀ inĀ accordanceĀ withĀ appliedĀ knowledge;Ā removesĀ victimsĀ fromĀ seriousĀ auto accidents,Ā structuresĀ onĀ fire,Ā orĀ otherĀ dangerousĀ situations;Ā emergencyĀ medicalĀ care to injured persons; performs property conservation (salvage) operations; assists in clean-up operation after the fire is suppressed.

MayĀ beĀ assignedĀ asĀ aĀ driverĀ ofĀ aĀ vehicleĀ orĀ apparatus;Ā checksĀ radioĀ operability;Ā responsibleĀ for maintainingĀ apparatus,Ā equipment,Ā inventoryĀ andĀ otherĀ logs;Ā mayĀ communicateĀ byĀ radioĀ from fire, rescue and other emergency scenes.

May be assigned as the operator of a heavy-dutyĀ diesel-powered pumper truck or aerial truck; directsĀ hoseĀ connectionsĀ atĀ pump;Ā operatesĀ pumps,Ā makingĀ sureĀ properĀ pressureĀ andĀ waterĀ flow is maintained; operates aerial ladder or snorkel power lift.

OperatesĀ fireĀ apparatusĀ toĀ andĀ fromĀ theĀ fireĀ orĀ rescueĀ sceneĀ overĀ theĀ optimalĀ routeĀ atĀ high speeds in the safest and most efficient manner in accordance with departmental policy.

ParticipatesĀ inĀ theĀ on-dutyĀ companyĀ physicalĀ fitnessĀ program.

Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting, emergency medical technique trainingĀ andĀ relatedĀ subjects;Ā participatesĀ inĀ pre-fireĀ surveysĀ ofĀ industrialĀ andĀ otherĀ business buildings, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and multi-family dwellings; prepares floor plans, records and locates key itemsĀ on floor plans of facilities for departmental use in the event of fires, disasters or other emergencies.

Responds to a variety of emergency callsĀ requiring the performance of a varietyĀ of emergency medicalĀ skills,Ā suchĀ asĀ administeringĀ oxygen,Ā cardiopulmonaryĀ resuscitation,Ā emergencyĀ medical care and related tasks.Ā 

PerformsĀ generalĀ maintenanceĀ andĀ cleaningĀ workĀ inĀ theĀ upkeepĀ ofĀ apparatus,Ā equipment, furnishings and structures.

AidsĀ inĀ theĀ evacuationĀ ofĀ portionsĀ ofĀ theĀ countyĀ duringĀ naturalĀ orĀ otherĀ disasters.Ā 

Assists law enforcement agencies in the investigation of arson cases.

PerformsĀ relatedĀ workĀ asĀ assigned.

  1. IsĀ atĀ leastĀ 18Ā yearsĀ of age.

  2. CertifiesĀ underĀ oathĀ thatĀ he/sheĀ isĀ notĀ addictedĀ toĀ alcoholĀ orĀ anyĀ controlledĀ substance.

  3. Certifies under oath that he/she is free from anyĀ physical or mental defect or disease thatĀ might impair his/her abilityĀ to drive an ambulance and perform his/her duties.

  4. MeetĀ theĀ followingĀ drivingĀ historyĀ requirements:

  5. PossessĀ aĀ validĀ AmericanĀ HeartĀ AssociationĀ CPRĀ "BLSĀ forĀ HealthĀ CareĀ Providers"Ā cardĀ or the American Red Cross Professional CPR card or American Heart Association (AHA) or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI)Ā 

  6. MustĀ haveĀ aĀ validĀ driver'sĀ licenseĀ andĀ beĀ ableĀ toĀ secureĀ aĀ validĀ FloridaĀ driver’sĀ licenseĀ atĀ theĀ time of employment.

  7. Attend and successfully complete training as an Emergency Medical Technician.

  8. AcquireĀ andĀ maintainĀ aĀ validĀ StateĀ ofĀ FloridaĀ EmergencyĀ MedicalĀ Technician (EMT)Ā License, course will be scheduled through Polk County Fire Rescue. Ā Attendance is mandatory when scheduled by Polk County Fire Rescue.

  9. Certification of completion of Emergency Medical Responder.

SPECIALĀ REQUIREMENTS

MustĀ obtainĀ andĀ maintainĀ FederalĀ BureauĀ ofĀ InvestigationsĀ (FBI)Ā CriminalĀ JusticeĀ Information Services (CJIS) Security Awareness certification through the Florida Department of Law EnforcementĀ (FDLE)Ā EmployeesĀ hiredĀ intoĀ thisĀ positionĀ afterĀ JanuaryĀ 1,Ā 2013Ā mustĀ obtainĀ and maintain this certification as a condition of employment.

Applicant/employeeĀ shallĀ beĀ fingerprintedĀ andĀ subjectĀ toĀ personalĀ backgroundĀ investigation procedures to ascertain an evaluation and determination of moral character according to Chapter 69A-37 Firefighters Standards and Training.

Applicants who have not been employed by the Polk County Fire Rescue Division in a firefighter-emergencyĀ medicalĀ technicianĀ capacityĀ willĀ beĀ requiredĀ toĀ produceĀ documentation ofĀ successfully completing the following:

  • National Testing Network CandidateĀ PhysicalĀ AbilityĀ TestĀ (CPAT) or Ridge Physical Ability Test (RPAT) andĀ theĀ examĀ dateĀ canĀ beĀ noĀ moreĀ thanĀ one calendar year from the hire date.Ā Ā Ā Ā

Must have a valid Florida driver’s license or be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at time of employment within this classification.Ā
