LEAD ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER, CONSTRUCTION SAFETY 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day activities, priorities, and performance of the EHS construction safety team (EHS Engineers, Specialists, and Technicians), including primary input into hiring, termination, promotion, performance management, and reward decisions
  • Review and approve Purchase Orders and manage the operational budget for construction safety programs
  • Develop practical solutions that improve construction site safety, reduce incident rates, drive contractor engagement, and advance the overall EHS program; drive remedial actions when safety policies are not met and ensure EHS policies, practices, and procedures are understood and consistently followed by direct reports, project teams, clients, and contractors
  • Review and interpret new and proposed safety laws and regulations (with emphasis on construction-related requirements) and provide clear guidance to management
  • Provide training, coaching, and technical guidance to direct reports and construction stakeholders on job hazard analyses (JHAs), safe work procedures, contractor onboarding, permits to work, and other key risk management tools to ensure consistent implementation of a robust construction safety program
  • Hold routine site/operation-wide Contractor Safety Steering Reviews to drive accountability for execution of EHS performance across contractor groups
  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of regulatory and site-specific occupational safety policies for construction activities, including regular inspections of sites, temporary facilities, heavy machinery, scaffolding, fall protection systems, and safety equipment to identify hazards and ensure compliance with OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926) and all applicable regulations
  • Perform construction safety compliance audits, pre-task planning reviews, and contractor risk assessments; collaborate with project leadership, superintendents, and contractors to proactively ensure SpaceX construction safety standards and regulatory requirements are met 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4+ years of experience in the design, development, and operational oversight of environmental, health, and safety programs with an emphasis on construction safety operations 
  • 3+ years of leadership experience  

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or related field (emphasis in Construction Safety preferred)
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and communication skills with a clear aptitude and desire to lead people
  • Hands-on experience leading multi-site or multi-contractor construction safety programs in high-risk or complex environments
  • Able to review as-built drawings, assess safety-in-design opportunities, and lead technical risk engineering solutions in the design-build environment  
  • Strong knowledge and experience interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state, and local construction safety regulations (OSHA 1926, Cal/OSHA, etc.)
  • Experience with fall protection, scaffolding, crane/heavy equipment safety, excavation, confined space, and contractor safety management (including contractor pre-qual)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, CHST, or equivalent preferred 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be able to work extended hours, weekends, and travel to construction sites as needed
  • Must be able to work in outdoor construction environments and wear required personal protective equipment
