Job Description

We offer a competitive salary for this role, with an expected range of $57,700–$88,400/yr. The final offer will depend on your experience, skills, and overall qualifications. Bath Iron Works is seeking a Safety Engineer to join our Safety & Health department. In this role you will be responsible for assisting with the administration and management of occupational health and safety programs within the Safety Engineering discipline in a very dynamic, fast paced shipyard industry.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership:
    • Identifying workplace hazards and feasible means of abatement
    • Participating in regular scheduled workplace inspections
    • Developing fall protection plans
  • Project Execution:
    • Assisting with establishing and maintaining safety and health programs and management systems
  • Training and Development:
    • Provide training as necessary to ensure total safety culture is attainable
  • Team Collaboration and Communication:
    • Assisting management and supervision with the recognition and abatement of hazards
    • Providing direction and technical support on compliance with OSHA standards and company procedures
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Conduct root cause accident and incident investigations as well as developing subsequent corrective action(s)
    • Reviewing the effectiveness of compliance programs

 

 

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor's Degree in environmental, safety, and health science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Specific demonstrated experience in work place health and safety programs/oversight may be substituted for educational requirements.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Safety/Health Engineer II - 2-4 years of experience in health and safety oversight/programs.  
  • Safety/Health Engineer III - 5+ years of experience in health and safety oversight/programs.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial environment or shipyard preferred.
  • Specific experience in lifting and handling, rigging, fall protection, confined space entry, industrial hygiene and / or ergonomics preferred.
  • Technical writing skills and knowledge of OSHA and/or industry standards preferred.
  • Must be physically able to lift, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces and at heights (required).
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity with Access required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task and to plan and coordinate time dependent activities required.
  • Good organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, team building, and decision-making abilities required.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities required.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with personnel in all areas and levels of the company required.
