Position Summary

The Butcher Block Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Butcher Block and service meat counter, ensuring exceptional customer service, product quality, food safety compliance, and operational efficiency. This position provides leadership and direction to department associates while supporting sales growth, inventory management, merchandising execution, and achievement of department performance goals.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Oversee daily Butcher Block and service counter activities.
  • Ensure meat products are properly cut, packaged, labeled, stocked, and displayed.
  • Maintain department presentation standards and product freshness.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Support execution of promotional programs, seasonal displays, and merchandising initiatives.
  • Ensure service counter operations meet company productivity and quality standards.
Customer Service
  • Provide exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
  • Assist customers with custom cutting requests, product selection, and preparation recommendations.
  • Answer questions regarding meat products, cooking methods, and meal solutions.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and in a timely manner.
  • Promote department sales through product expertise and customer engagement.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise and provide daily direction to Butcher Block associates.
  • Assist with training, coaching, and development of department team members.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and customer service excellence.
  • Monitor work performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Support department leadership in achieving staffing and productivity goals.
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor proper handling, storage, dating, labeling, and rotation procedures.
  • Conduct routine quality checks to ensure freshness and product integrity.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of knives, grinders, saws, slicers, and other equipment.
Inventory & Financial Performance
  • Assist in controlling shrink through proper ordering, rotation, and inventory management practices.
  • Monitor product movement and identify opportunities to improve sales and profitability.
  • Support labor productivity and expense control initiatives.
  • Assist with inventory counts and operational audits.
  • Contribute to achieving department sales, margin, labor, and shrink objectives.
Qualifications
  • Previous meat department, butcher, food service, or retail supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat cutting, merchandising, inventory control, and food safety practices.
  • Strong leadership and customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to train, coach, and develop associates.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to safely operate meat department equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move products consistent with department requirements.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments for extended periods.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
