Job Summary:
Med Surg
Registered Nurses are responsible for assessing and identifying patient needs and implementing and monitoring patient medical plans and treatments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates and reviews care plans. Ensures care plans, medications, treatments, and nurse notes comply with provider orders.
- Develops a care plan within 12 hours based on nursing assessment and is customized to include patient specific problems and needs.
- Applying and discontinuing telemetry monitor per physician order
- Updates and revises care plans following medical orders and in accordance with nursing policy and procedures as patient conditions and needs change.
- Starts IV’s, inserts foley catheters, nasogastric tubes, rectal tubes and any other treatment within his/her scope of practice as ordered by the physician.
- Gives medications, including IV piggyback-diluted medications and IV push medications.
- Administers medications in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
- Collects lab specimens and records results in the patient's chart. Notifies physician of lab results.
- Assesses the physical and psychosocial growth and development of patients.
- Assists with patient care including wound care, Activities of Daily Life care, meals, etc.
- Completes admission assessments on assigned patients within 12 hours of admission.
- Assesses patients at the beginning of each shift and as patient conditions change. Documents the assessments.
- Follows unit-based and age appropriate guidelines in performing patient assessments.
- Monitors patients for any changes in condition and intervenes early by notifying the Nurse Manager or provider of the changes that occurred during the shift.
- Informs the patient’s provider of changes in patient conditions.
- Performs patient rounds every 2 hours.
- Provides patients and families with appropriate and complete discharge information. Assesses understanding.
- Assists with communicating patient updates to families and medical staff.
- Co-signs orders processed within 2 hours. Processes stat orders within 15 minutes and routine orders within 2 hours.
- Participates in nurse rounding and reporting prior to shift change.
- Completes unit safety checks and identifies, eliminates, and reports any identified safety issues every shift.
- Charts medications and any other pertinent patient information.
- Completes patient documentation every shift.
- Enters patient charges every shift.
- Assists with 24-hour chart checks.
- Orders patient supplies and materials.
- Acts as a preceptor for nursing students and orients new hires of the same discipline.
- Keeps the work station clean and assists with housekeeping duties (employee fridge, putting away supplies, etc).
- Takes call rotations.
- Performs other job-related duties as requested.
Job Qualifications
Education/Qualification Requirements:
- Current RN License in the State of Georgia.
- Current BLS certification. (Must obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Current CPI certification. (Must obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Current ACLS certification. (Must obtain within 6 months of hire).
- Current PALS certification. (Must obtain within 6 months of hire).
Experience:
- Previous experience as a Registered Nurse is preferred but not required.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
