Job Summary: Surgical Technicians provide assistance to Surgeons during surgical operations by preparing, maintaining, handing, etc. supplies and instruments appropriately before, during, and after procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares the operating room for procedures, including setting up sterile instrument tables, mayo stands, and basin stands.
- Assists with draping and other preparations for surgery.
- Prepares patients by washing and disinfecting incision sites.
- Performs a proper surgical scrub of hands and arms; dresses in a sterile gown and gloves.
- Assists the surgeon with the operative procedure by handing instruments, sutures, and other necessary items as needed.
- Maintains a sterile environment throughout the procedure to prevent infection.
- Observes and ensures that sterile technique is followed during surgery.
- Counts sponges, lap tapes, needles, and other supplies with the circulating nurse before the procedure begins and prior to wound closure.
- Assists in cleaning and dressing wounds after the procedure.
- Clears the instrument table, disposes of drapes, and cleans instruments after surgery.
- Ensures equipment is functioning correctly and coordinates repairs or loaner orders as needed.
- Cleans and sterilizes tables, fixtures, and all required supplies for the OR and other hospital areas (ER, OB, ICU).
- Restocks the OR and sets up for the next procedure after cleaning.
- Sets up and assists with endoscopies, colonoscopies, and PEG procedures.
- Assists with OR scheduling when necessary and coordinates with other staff.
- Maintains PAR levels and orders necessary supplies, counting inventory as needed.
- Assists in other clinical areas during OR downtime, as competencies allow.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Qualification Requirements:
- Successful completion from an accredited college or Technical Institute of Surgical Technician course/training, previous work experience in field, or education in related field.
- Current BLS certification. (must obtain within 90 days of hire)
Experience:
- Previous clinical and/or surgical experience preferred but not required.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
