Under general direction and supervision of the City Manager, the Municipal Court Clerk performs routine clerical and customer service functions, such as answering phones, greeting customers, responding to inquiries, posting payments and bonds, maintaining case files, and preparing court dockets.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Processes traffic citations, parking citations, and other complaints/processes as directed by Municipal Court Judge.
  • Issue court notices and summons, prepare materials and information for the Municipal Judge to review and sign.
  • Serve as courtroom clerk during court sessions.
  • Accept payments at clerk window for fines and appearance bonds.
  • Maintains accurate records for court, including docket, fee and receipt records showing monies collected.
  • Prepares and processes case files for various types of proceedings, including forwarding appropriate notice to corresponding parties and entering actions taken into electronic court management system.
  • Perform administrative tasks of varying complexity that require considerable discretion and knowledge of municipal court operations and procedures.  
  • Deal courteously and effectively with customers and other city employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years (2) of clerical experience in a customer service environment.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with at least one or more years of municipal court experience.
  • Active Level I Court Clerk Certification or ability to obtain certification within eighteen months (18) of hire date.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of municipal court processes and procedures, as well as pertinent Federal, State and local laws.
  • Ability to communicate court procedures and processes in a clear, concise, and comprehensive manner to attorneys, defendants, and the public.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and departments.
  • Experience with standard office equipment and tasks including, but not limited to, computers, phones, document scanners and scanning, data entry, and court software.

  • Work primarily in an office setting.
  • Repetitive motions, sit or stand for prolonged periods of time (e.g., answering phones, data entry, filing).
  • Occasional travel is required for training and continuing education purposes.
  • Must be able to work in occasionally stressful situations.
  • Bend or stoop to retrieve files or office materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
