Job Summary:
The responsibility of the Charge Nurse is communication and coordination of all activities in the assigned departments. Must be able to communicate with all members of the health care team in a timely, accurate, concise, and professional manner. The charge nurse oversees patient care, staff, and management of departmental day-to-day operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises unit staff during daily operations.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Acts as a champion for change
- Offers mentoring and training to new staff and is a resource for coworkers
- Responsible for the smooth and efficient patient flow between departments
- Coordinates daily administrative duties including schedules, nursing assignments and patient care
- Helps to prepare and maintain a state of readiness for accreditation according to standards and regulations
- Ensures BSC policies and procedures are upheld and that protocols for fire safety, infection control, and disaster preparedness are followed.
- Assists with policy and procedure updates based on Evidence-Based-Practice
- Helps to complete audits as delegated by Manager such as hand hygiene and PPE
- Coordinates lunches and breaks for staff
- Provides direct patient care as needed
- Provides manager feedback on staff performance
- Assist Manager with annual competency training and maintains documentation
- Offers just-in-time coaching and feedback to peers and helps to manage conflict on the unit
- Maintains a professional behavior and acts as a role model to the team
- Works in cooperation with physicians and anesthesia to ensure quality of patient care
- Encourages a culture that promotes staff autonomy
- Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills
- Attends team meetings
- Responsible for daily checklist completion
- Follows established chain of command for addressing issues, concerns, and problems in the department if needed.
- Responds to emergency situations
- Adheres to safety policies and practices good body mechanics and ergonomics
- Follows all rules and regulations for PHI and HIPAA protections of patient information
- Follows all policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, attendance, code of conduct, safety and safeguarding confidential information
- Reports incidents in a timely manner
- Promotes patient and employee safety and communicates concerns appropriately, following Chain of Command
- Attends in-service programs as requested
- Demonstrates ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively and undertakes responsibility of changing behavior or seeks further guidance as needed
- Performs other related duties as directed
Qualifications:
- Must meet all qualifications of staff nurse job description
- Must be employed at Bend Surgery Center for 1 year
- Must be in good employment standing with no active progressive discipline or performance improvement plan
- Must have exemplary attendance record
- Must have thorough knowledge of BSC policies and procedures
- Proven leadership skills
- Proven organizational skills
