JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

TheĀ Thun LibraryĀ at Penn State BerksĀ is looking forĀ a LibrariesĀ SpecialistĀ toĀ assistĀ libraryĀ patrons with advanced requests,Ā serveĀ as a resource for other part-time libraryĀ employees, andĀ navigateĀ service interruptions.Ā ApplicantsĀ mustĀ commitĀ to workingĀ 15Ā hours perĀ week (during open library hours),Ā including evenings and weekends, with core hoursĀ changingĀ duringĀ breaksĀ and summerĀ to align withĀ theĀ academic year.Ā This position is ideal forĀ non-students,Ā studentsĀ with experience supervising or working independently in a customer service setting, and current Student Library Assistants. All are encouraged to apply.Ā No priorĀ libraryĀ isĀ required;Ā libraryĀ training will be provided.Ā 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:Ā Ā Ā 

  • Welcome students, staff, faculty, and community members to the libraryĀ 

  • Check out/inĀ books, equipment, andĀ otherĀ library materialsĀ 

  • Confirm study room reservationsĀ 

  • Provide guidance on user accounts andĀ libraryĀ servicesĀ 

  • Follow library operation processes and proceduresĀ 

  • May oversee library operations during opening or closingĀ 

  • Assist Student Library Assistants (SLAs) with service questions and override permissionsĀ 

  • Address building concernsĀ including, but not limited to, disruptiveĀ patronĀ behaviorĀ or maintenance issuesĀ 

  • AssistĀ othersĀ with technology,Ā referring to PSU IT when necessaryĀ 

  • AnswerĀ general questionsĀ about the library and theĀ Penn State BerksĀ campusĀ Ā 

  • AssistĀ users and colleagues with advanced requests and support servicesĀ 

  • ReferĀ in-depth questions to the library team and/orĀ appropriate departmentsĀ Ā Ā 

  • Retrieve and shelve materialsĀ correctlyĀ inĀ a 68,000+Ā itemĀ collectionĀ 

  • Inform the library team ofĀ service concernsĀ orĀ suggestionsĀ 

Looking for theseĀ qualifications:Ā 

  • Customer service experienceĀ Ā 

  • Non-students,Ā studentsĀ with experience supervising or working independently in a customer service setting, and current Student Library Assistants

  • Ability to clearly communicateĀ through face-to-faceĀ and written communicationĀ Ā
