Responsibilities:
This position has the primary responsibility for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens that are to be accessioned into the laboratory.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Pre-analytical handling and processing of specimens: responsible for receiving specimens into the lab and sample tracking; tracks missing specimens through monitoring daily pending list and follows up with emails/phone calls when necessary. Problem solve missing samples by using SOFTLab tracking, eRecord, and communicating with other departments as needed. May be responsible for sample registration in SoftGenomics.
Performs weekly, monthly, biannual and annual equipment maintenance dependent upon equipment needs such as: incubator, centrifuge, biosafety cabinet, fridge, freezer and water bath cleaning. All maintenance is in the form of mechanism cleaning which includes turning off equipment, disassembling, cleaning and reassembling the equipment. Documents maintenance performed according to lab standards on paper logs. Safety protocols must be followed for incubators as removal and relocation of samples is required.
Manages the archive storage system for fixed pellet samples from bone marrow and blood. Archives new samples by aliquotting existing samples into long-term storage tubes. Aliquoting requires the proper labeling of microcontainer tubes for storage and pipetting. Maintains samples in a cold room (-8°C) and notifies supervisory staff when storage conditions fall outside acceptable range. Maintains an organized sample storage system and discards outdated samples based on guidelines for Cytogenetics lab. Retrieves samples from the archive as needed.
Receives and manages incoming telephone calls from a variety of sources, including providers, couriers, and vendors, and appropriately triages inquiries to the correct laboratory personnel. Handles internal and external communications while adhering to restrictions on releasing patient results over the phone. Manually documents calls or via documents via email when necessary. Troubleshoots issues or delegates to appropriate personnel or manager as needed. Utilizes job aids to assist with routing and escalation.

Stocks and manages laboratory consumable supplies such as pipettes, reagents, and chemicals while maintaining accurate manual inventory records. Â Performs weekly inventory checklist to monitor lab supply needs by comparing required stock against available quantitates Unpacks deliveries, labels, and stocks items per standard lab procedure. Damaged, recalled and expired goods are escalated to a supervisor.
Prepares, cleans and autoclaves instruments and materials such as glass coverslips, glass pipettes, and forceps based on manufacturer instructions Documents autoclave cycles are documented via paper log and repeats failed cycles or utilizes an alternative autoclave machine as needed. Adheres to safety requirements by using heat-protective gloves during autoclaving procedures. Should a cycle fail, it will be repeated and/or an alternative autoclave machine can be utilized. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree in Laboratory Sciences and technical training closely related to this position required
