WSP is currently initiating a search for a Mid-Level Electrical Engineer (Renewables) to join our Renewables Business Unit. This position may be based in Billings, MT or the Denver, CO metropolitan area, with flexibility for a hybrid work environment. Candidates must reside within driving distance of an established WSP office.

This role supports all phases of the renewable energy interconnection process and delivery of renewable generation onto the electrical grid. Responsibilities include supporting interconnection applications, detailed electrical design, utility coordination, protection and control design, and commissioning support for medium- to extra-high-voltage renewable generation and substation facilities. Work will involve supporting multiple projects concurrently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions that meet industry standards and client expectations.
Provides technical assistance and guidance for the due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector. Â Assist with the research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects). Â Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding material, installations, component, and construction specifications. Â Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
- Perform detailed electrical design for medium- to extra-high-voltage utility substations and renewable energy facilities.
- Develop electrical design deliverables including:
- One-line diagrams
- Control and relaying schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- SCADA and communications systems
- Conduit and cable sizing/routing
- Substation physical layouts
- Equipment selection and specifications
- Support renewable energy interconnection projects from application through detailed design and construction.
- Assist with proposal preparation, engineering estimates, project schedules, and technical documentation.
- Perform electrical engineering calculations and design analyses in accordance with IEEE, NEC, NESC, and other applicable standards.
- Support protective relaying and power system studies, including:
- Short-circuit analysis
- Time-current coordination
- Relay settings development
- Arc flash analysis
- Protection scheme development
- NERC compliance support
- Assist with infrastructure design studies, including:
- Grounding analysis
- Insulation coordination
- Electromagnetic field analysis
- Power quality studies
- Motor starting studies
- AC interference evaluations
- Utilize industry-standard software tools such as:
- SEL AcSELerator QuickSet and Architect
- GE Enervista
- ASPEN OneLiner
- SKM Power Tools
- ETAP
- PSCAD
- CDEGS
- ATP-EMTP
- Provide construction support and participate in field commissioning activities.
- Perform QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables.
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients, contractors, and utility personnel.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Renewable Energy Engineering from an accredited institution, preferably with a power systems emphasis.
- Experience supporting utility substation design projects.
- Experience with IEEE and ANSI standards.
- Experience working on multiple engineering projects concurrently.
- Experience providing construction support and/or field commissioning support.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with internal project teams and external client stakeholders.
- Legally authorized to work permanently in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Approximately 5 years of experience in utility substation design.
- Experience designing substations ranging from 15kV to 500kV.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience supporting renewable energy generation and interconnection projects.
- Familiarity with protection and control systems, SCADA, and utility communications.
- Experience with ETAP, ASPEN, SKM, PSCAD, CDEGS, or similar power system analysis tools.
