Maintenance Mechanics working within the Merit System inspect, perform routine maintenance, and repair cars and light trucks, heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and other equipment such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and generators. Employees in this job class are expected to fabricate parts, perform bodywork, and may even construct pieces of equipment in order to perfect repairs on rolling stock or other equipment. Parts and equipment are typically fabricated through the machining, cutting, and welding of steel and other metals. Maintenance Mechanics may be called upon to do a variety of tasks involving metallurgic design and fabrication such as the recreation of broken parts, creating parts for various pieces of rolling stock, creating tools and equipment, or even fabricating parts, equipment, or small structures for municipal buildings. Work is performed according to department guidelines and is reviewed by supervisors and/or superintendents. Typical job duties include performing minor bodywork on rolling stock, maintenance and repairs on hydraulic systems, inspecting equipment before and after work, fabricating parts, preventive maintenance and tune-ups on various vehicles and equipment, repairs on emergency equipment, maintaining building and grounds, repairs on small air-cooled engines, tire repairs, and going to worksites to retrieve equipment or make repairs. The job involves significant physical exertion, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in environments with exposure to dust, gasoline, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and mechanical hazards.
