Responsibilities

Brasfield & Gorrie, a recognized leader in the construction industry consistently ranking among ENR's top contractors, has an opportunity available for a Subcontractor Default Protection (SDP) Underwriter in Birmingham, Alabama. B&G's SDP program gives direct control over subcontractor risk evaluation, allowing faster decisions and deeper integration with our project teams.

 

The SDP Underwriter requires strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, business management acumen and must demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, communication, client service, and time management. As a valued member of the SDP team, you will report to the SDP Underwriting Manager having the opportunity to collaborate with talented professionals and contribute to the sustainable growth of our company.

 

Responsibilities and Essential Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Investigate, analyze, and manage all necessary underwriting, accounting, and workflows within the framework of Brasfield & Gorrie’s Subcontractor Default Protection (SDP) Program
  • Make thorough evaluations and assessments of a subcontractor’s financial, technical, organizational, and management capacities, including experience, scopes of work, bonding capacities, and project specific risk factors
  • Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation within the company database, adhering to documentation standards
  • Up to 15% travel required for subcontractor visits, job sites, and regional B&G offices
  • Foster and maintain relationships with subcontractors through regular communication, financial requests, and other required documentation
  • Collaborate with preconstruction and operations teams to ensure the SDP program is well understood, consistently applied, and aligned with project and company objectives
  • Serve as a trusted resource to operations and preconstruction teams, providing timely underwriting decisions and clear communication on SDP eligibility and risk
  • Prepare reports and presentations to be delivered to company leadership
  • Contribute to the development and onboarding of future SDP team members as the program scales

 


Education - Skills - Knowledge - Qualifications & Experience

Education/Qualifications/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field required
  • 5+ years relevant work experience in surety underwriting, commercial loan underwriting, or financial analysis
  • Strong critical thinking with the ability to underwrite, identify financial challenges, and analyze available information to make decisions in alignment with risk appetite
  • Experience with financial statement analysis including balance sheets, WIP schedules, and cash flow statements
  • Understanding of the construction and risk management industry
  • Familiarity with construction project delivery methods (GMP, lump sum, design-build) preferred
  • Experience with subcontractor pre-qualification platforms or CRM/database systems
  • AFSB (Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding) designation a plus
  • Functions effectively as part of a team and individually
  • Maintains strict confidentiality with sensitive financial and business information
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism in a fast-paced construction environment
