Founded in 2018 in Birmingham, Alabama, Build UP is a workforce development high school model with three campuses and six programs in Birmingham and Selma, Alabama and Brownsville, Texas. The vision of Build UP is to empower and equip youth and communities to determine their own future. At Build UP, students are able to:

Position: YouthBuild Dean of Instruction

Location: Build UP Community School (BUCS) Youth BuildUP Birmingham Program (YBB)

Reports to: YBB Program Director

Position Overview

The Dean of Instruction leads academic programming, instructional improvement, graduation planning, and student intervention systems for YouthBuild participants. This role ensures students remain on track for Alabama high school graduation under Option B "Workforce Diploma" requirements for the Classes of 2026 and 2027 while supporting academic achievement, workforce readiness, and postsecondary success through data-driven instruction, individualized support plans, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Dean provides high quality instructional leadership and delivery, oversees transcript analysis and graduation tracking, supports staff development, and helps create a trauma-informed, student-centered learning environment for opportunity youth with significant barriers.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership & Delivery

● Lead and monitor academic programming to ensure rigorous, standards-aligned instruction and measurable student achievement.

● Supervise and coach instructional staff through classroom observations, lesson plan reviews, feedback, and professional development.

● Implement data-driven instruction (DDI), small-group instruction, and targeted intervention strategies to improve academic outcomes.

● Facilitate instructional data meetings to monitor attendance, academic progress, measurable skill gains, and graduation readiness.

● Promote trauma-informed, culturally responsive instructional practices that support student engagement and persistence.

Graduation and Academic Oversight

● Maintain expertise in Alabama High School Graduation Requirements, Alabama Administrative Code 290-3-1-.02(8) and (8)(a), and Option B requirements.

● Analyze high school transcripts, monitor credit attainment, and develop individualized graduation plans.

● Coordinate credit recovery, testing readiness, and intervention supports to ensure students remain on track for completion.

● Collaborate with school districts and educational partners to verify transcripts, credits, and graduation eligibility.

Student Support and Case Management

● Collaborate with case managers, counselors, instructors, and workforce staff to develop and monitor Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

● Coordinate wraparound services addressing academic, employment, social-emotional, and personal barriers impacting student success.

● Participate in case conferencing, transition planning, and follow-up services to support persistence, completion, and postsecondary success.

● Support life-skills development, workforce readiness, and postsecondary transition planning.

Data, Compliance, and Accountability

● Maintain accurate academic records, graduation documentation, case notes, and student progress data.

● Monitor program outcomes including attendance, credit attainment, measurable skill gains (MSGs), TABE performance, and graduation progress.

● Ensure compliance with YouthBuild, state, federal, and grant reporting requirements.

● Use data systems and continuous improvement practices to strengthen instructional effectiveness and student outcomes.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred

● Minimum of three (3) years of instructional leadership, secondary education, or alternative education experience

● Knowledge of Alabama graduation requirements and transcript analysis

● Experience with data-driven instruction, intervention systems, and youth development

● Experience working with opportunity youth or students with significant barriers

● Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
