Job Summary:

The Acute-Subacute Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Department Clerk supports the Registered Nurse and Licensed Vocational Nurse in providing designated non-professional basic care services. The Acute-Subacute CNA Department Clerk performs a variety of unit-based clerical duties to include preparation, maintenance, and processing of patient records, relaying messages and patient requests to appropriate personnel, and greeting and assisting patients, visitors, and other personnel. 

 

Job Relationships:

  1. Reports directly to the Acute Subacute Services/ICU Nurse Manager
  2. Reports indirectly to the House Supervisor and other management covering the department. 
  3. Directly functions under the oversight of the Unit RN
  4. Collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in the coordination of patient care.

Occupational Hazards:

Works in the general hospital setting. This position includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

 

Samples of Duties:

  • Performs essential functions listed on the department CNA/Department Clerk Skills Checklist according to the defined age of patient population 
  • Assists in making all necessary preparations for assigned patient’s hospitalization
  • Assists RN with patient care
  • Prepares chart for patient information not in the electronic record
  • Answers call lights in a timely fashion. Ensures that the proper staff member is notified in order to assist the patient
  • Assists with cleaning and restocking of rooms as needed
  • Answers the unit phone using correct phone etiquette and directs calls as appropriate
  • Understands and able to use the unit copy/fax machine ensuring the correct HIPAA policies are followed
  • Able to function in an emergent situation.     Knows how to use the push to talk phone system to contact the appropriate staff members
  • Uses hospital information system/electronic health record effectively
  • Good communication with the unit staff and ancillary departments
  • Maintains and updates shift work card
  • Complies with departmental staffing practices
  • Completes NIHD mandatory competency
  • Completes annual on-going competency plan
  • Attends NIHD in-services and/or programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge of:

  • The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District; 
  • NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
  • NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;

Skills/Abilities to:

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;

  • Basic Computer knowledge

Minimum Qualifications:

                        

Education: 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent 

 

Certification: 

  1. BLS upon 1 month of hire and ongoing
  2. Current CNA certification 

Preferred: 

 

Education: 

  1. Associates degree
