Position Summary

The Operating Room Registered Nurse delivers individualized, patient-centered perioperative nursing care through every phase of the surgical experience. Utilizing the nursing process and evidence-based practice, the OR RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe, efficient, and exceptional surgical care.

This role requires strong critical thinking, attention to detail, clinical expertise, and a commitment to patient advocacy before, during, and after every procedure.

What You'll Do

Deliver Exceptional Perioperative Care

  • Assess, prepare, and educate patients before surgery
  • Perform pre-operative assessments and verify patient identity, procedure, and surgical site
  • Serve as the circulating nurse during a variety of surgical procedures
  • Assist with patient positioning, preparation, and protection throughout surgery
  • Monitor patient safety while maintaining sterile technique and infection prevention standards

Collaborate with the Surgical Team

  • Work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and PACU staff
  • Assist with anesthesia procedures, patient monitoring, and intraoperative care
  • Coordinate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts to ensure patient safety
  • Communicate patient status effectively throughout each phase of care
  • Participate in patient transfers and provide thorough handoff reports

Promote Surgical Excellence

  • Maintain complete and accurate surgical documentation
  • Assist with specimen handling and medication administration according to hospital policy
  • Prepare operating rooms, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and ensure surgical readiness
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based perioperative practices
  • Assist in PACU as needed following appropriate orientation

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
  • Current Idaho Registered Nurse (RN) License required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • ACLS and PALS certifications highly recommended
  • Current hospital nursing experience within the past five years or recent nursing graduate within the past two years
  • Previous Operating Room or Perioperative nursing experience preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills
  • Experience with electronic medical record systems preferred

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of perioperative nursing standards and sterile technique
  • Ability to function as a circulating nurse during surgical procedures
  • Understanding of anesthesia principles and post-operative care
  • Strong patient assessment and clinical decision-making abilities
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and teamwork
