Job Description: 

  • The Defense Technology Development group has a need for a Laser Engineer to support the design and development of our high-power fiber amplifier products.  This is a fast-paced, highly technical, and continually evolving product line with a rapid transition from R&D to production.  You will work with a multi-disciplinary team to demonstrate new concepts and turn those demonstrations into new products to support our customers’ needs and our internal development roadmap.  We are looking for an energetic and self-motivated engineer/scientist to support and lead efforts ranging from product definition and planning through production and release.  Ideal candidates will have a background in multiple disciplines, including laser physics, programming, and electronics.  A detailed understanding of laser physics is required.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Interface with highly technical customers and the product team to understand customer needs
  • Develop new product concepts to continually improve and advance the technology
  • Generate new ideas to help support our product growth roadmap
  • Work with a cross-functional team to develop cost-effective solutions and introduce new product ideas
  • Promote investigation and application of new technologies and industry trends to product management activities
  • Prove new concepts, develop first prototypes, and define and execute extensive testing
  • Transition prototype designs to our advanced production team
  • Troubleshoot and provide root cause failure analysis for prototype units through the development process
  • Support manufacturing with trouble-shooting and process refinements as needed
  • Provide assistance to customers for product or systems issues
  • Communicate progress to management and internal stake holders
  • Develop and maintain timelines for multiple products and projects
  • Ensure a safe work environment and cultivate safe behaviors
  • Lead/assist with technical proposal writing, IP development, and writing manuscripts for publication  

 

 Education and Work Experience:

  • Ph.D. degree preferred; M.S. degree with 10 years of relevant experience in Physics, Lasers, or a related field will be considered
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in an R&D environment preferably with hands on experience in fabrication and test of high power fiber lasers
  • Experience with nonlinear effects in fiber amplifiers is preferred
  • Experience with data analysis and numerical modelling tools like MATLAB, Python, or similar is preferred
  • Experience with Zemax OpticStudio is a plus
  • Working knowledge of electronics and embedded systems, and experience with embedded C and Microsoft Visual Studio is a plus
