Advanced Technical Writer

IETM | DoD Technical Documentation

We are hiring an Advanced Technical Writer to develop and maintain complex DoD technical documentation, Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), maintenance procedures, test procedures, and engineering documentation supporting hardware and software systems. This role requires experience translating complex engineering information into clear technical content, interpreting engineering drawings, working with CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks, and applying DoD MIL standards and technical writing style guides.

 

This role supports engineering and product development teams by planning, writing, editing, formatting, and publishing accurate operational and instructional documentation. You will manage complex technical writing assignments from inception through publication while coordinating project status with technical documentation leadership.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create, plan, write, edit, and maintain complex operational and instructional technical documentation.
  • Develop and update Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), maintenance procedures, and hardware and software test procedures.
  • Translate complex engineering processes, specifications, technical data, and developer documentation into clear, user-focused content.
  • Edit engineering and software development notes, procedures, and source material for clarity, accuracy, consistency, and publication readiness.
  • Apply required formatting, technical writing standards, style guides, and documentation requirements.
  • Research and interpret highly technical information to develop accurate technical documentation.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings and related technical information.
  • Collaborate with engineering, software development, and product development teams to gather and validate technical content.
  • Manage complex technical documentation assignments from inception through completion.
  • Communicate project status and documentation progress to the technical documentation lead.

 

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required by Federal Law
  • Associate’s degree in a related specialized area or field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant technical writing experience.
  • Knowledge of English language structure, grammar, composition, spelling, and technical writing conventions.
  • Experience researching complex technical information and interpreting technical data.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Understanding of DoD MIL standards and style guides, including the ability to apply required standards to technical documentation.
  • Ability to develop technical content appropriate for the intended audience by gathering information from engineering and technical subject matter experts.
