Safety Specialist

SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, the Safety Specialist supports BJWSA's safety and health programs by conducting inspections and audits, assisting with incident investigations and corrective-action follow-up, and coordinating employee training. Assists with maintaining safety policies, regulatory records, training documentation, and safety-management systems; coordinates PPE, occupational health testing, emergency equipment, and facility safety systems; and works with employees, supervisors, and vendors to address unsafe conditions. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supports compliance with OSHA and other applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations through the administration of safety programs, policies, records, reporting, and documentation.
• Identifies workplace hazards, promotes safe work practices, and collaborates with employees and management to mitigate risks and prevent incidents.
• Assists with incident reporting, investigations, corrective action tracking, follow-up activities, and related reporting to support continuous safety improvement.
• Coordinates and administers safety training programs, employee safety onboarding, required certifications, training records, and safety communications.
• Conducts and coordinates workplace safety inspections, audits, and compliance reviews while documenting findings and monitoring corrective actions.
• Manages safety equipment, supplies, occupational health program requirements, and related vendor and facility safety support activities.
• Provides administrative and operational support for safety programs, communications, records management, meetings, events, and departmental initiatives.
• Responds to emergency situations and after-hours safety needs as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

• Associate degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety management, environmental science, industrial technology, business administration, or a related field preferred. 
• Two years of progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, employee training, water or wastewater utility operations, public works, construction, or an industrial environment is preferred. 
• Equivalent combinations of education, military training, and relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of an associate’s degree

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. 
• Must obtain OSHA 30-hour General Industry and Construction course completion cards within one year of employment. 
• Must obtain a Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO) - General Industry certificate through an OSHA Training Institute Education Center, or an equivalent credential approved by BJWSA, within three years of employment. 
• Must obtain and maintain OSHA-authorized Outreach Trainer status in General Industry and Construction within five years of employment, subject to applicable prerequisite requirements.
•  Must obtain and maintain any additional licenses or certifications required for assigned duties.
