Overview

The Tufts University School of Medicine is launching the Sam W. Ho Center for Health Care Transformation (Ho Center, the Center), a new multidisciplinary center dedicated to advancing health care innovation, improving population health, and achieving health justice. The Dean is seeking an experienced leader to help establish the Center and guide its ongoing development, growth, and operations. 

Working closely with the Dean, Center leadership, and faculty across the School of Medicine and Tufts University, the Executive Director will help shape and advance the Center's research, education, and policy agenda. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, highly motivated, and visionary leader to help establish and grow a new center dedicated to advancing health care transformation, health justice, research, education, and policy. As the Center continues to evolve, the Executive Director will play a key role in shaping its future direction, growth, and impact. 

The Center will bring together faculty, researchers, clinicians, students, and external partners across Tufts University School of Medicine, Tufts Medicine, and other health care systems. In addition, the Center will align schools and departments across Tufts University, including community health, economics, informatics, nutritional sciences, veterinary medicine, dental medicine, policy, and communications, to foster a comprehensive and coordinated approach to health care transformation and health justice.

Through this cross-disciplinary and integrated approach, the Center will identify research, educational, and clinical priorities that advance health care transformation, improve health outcomes, and promote evidence-based solutions to today's most pressing health challenges. Areas of focus may include health justice, climate justice, food as medicine, community health, housing justice, and digital health. 

Established through the philanthropy and vision of Tufts trustee and alumnus Dr. Sam W. Ho, the Center reflects his lifelong commitment to advancing health justice and transforming health care delivery.

This is a fully onsite leadership position based at Tufts University's Health Sciences campus in Boston. Regular on-campus presence is expected five days per week.


What You'll Do

As Executive Director, you will provide strategic, operational, and organizational leadership to support the successful launch, development, growth, and long-term sustainability of the Sam W. Ho Center for Health Care Transformation. Working closely with the Dean, Center leadership, faculty, and stakeholders across academic, clinical, industry, governmental, philanthropic, and community sectors, you will help establish the Center and advance its mission through research, education, policy, and health care transformation initiatives.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine during the Center's launch, the Executive Director will play a pivotal role in the Center's development and long-term success. The role will evolve alongside the Center and includes responsibility for administrative operations, budget management, grant development, scientific development activities, and the successful implementation of strategic priorities.

The Executive Director will develop a strong understanding of the scientific principles and priorities driving the Center's mission in order to provide strategic planning and management support to Center leadership. Serving as one of the public faces of the Center, this individual will advance collaboration among faculty, administrators, industry partners, foundations, philanthropic organizations, and other key stakeholders.

Key Areas of Responsibility Include:

Lead Strategic Planning and Growth

  • Partner with Center leadership to develop, implement, and monitor the Center's strategic vision and long-range goals, providing regular updates and recommendations to leadership. 
  • Help shape future directions for research, education, policy, and health care transformation initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to expand the Center's impact across Tufts University and through external partnerships. 

Direct Operations and Financial Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Center and ensure successful execution of priorities, programs, and initiatives. 
  • Manage budgets, resources, and operational planning in collaboration with Center and School of Medicine leadership. 
  • Develop operational policies, processes, and infrastructure that support organizational effectiveness and ensure successful implementation of the Center's strategic priorities and future growth.
  • Recruit, manage, and support staff while fostering accountability and collaboration across Center activities.

Advance Funding and External Partnerships

  • Identify, cultivate, and secure funding opportunities through government agencies, foundations, industry partners, philanthropy, and other external sources.
  • Lead and support grant development efforts that expand the Center's research, education, and policy portfolio.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with academic institutions, health systems, industry leaders, and funding partners.
  • Advance business development, marketing, and public engagement efforts that elevate the Center's visibility, impact, and external partnerships.

Drive Collaboration and Program Success

  • Oversee a portfolio of multidisciplinary research, education, and policy initiatives, ensuring progress toward key milestones and objectives. 
  • Foster collaboration among faculty, researchers, clinicians, administrators, students, and external partners to advance the Center's mission.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the scientific, research, and educational priorities driving the Center's mission and use that knowledge to inform strategic planning, resource allocation, decision-making, and program development.
  • Stay informed about emerging scientific, educational, and industry developments, identifying opportunities for innovation, growth, and new collaborations.

Serve as a Representative for the Center

  • Act as an ambassador and public representative for the Center, communicating its mission, initiatives, and impact to internal and external audiences through presentations, media engagement, and other speaking opportunities.

Leadership, Strategy, and Organizational Impact

Please describe how your experience has prepared you to lead a multidisciplinary center, organization, or initiative. Highlight examples of strategic leadership, partnership development, organizational growth, and, where applicable, experience securing external funding. We are particularly interested in how you have translated organizational, scientific, research, educational, or policy priorities into impactful programs, operations, or initiatives.

Basic Requirements

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

  • MD and/or PhD in a health science discipline.
  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in academic medicine, health care, research administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading an academic research center, consortium, major healthcare initiative, or serving in a senior healthcare industry leadership role.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute organizational strategy, build and nurture relationships, engage diverse stakeholders, and align multidisciplinary groups around shared goals and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and engage with scientific, research, and educational priorities and translate them into organizational strategy, resource allocation, and operational execution.
  • Experience managing budgets, staff, and complex multidisciplinary operations.
  • Ability to translate strategic vision into action while balancing scientific, operational, and organizational priorities.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful track record securing external funding and developing competitive grant proposals.
  • Experience working in a research-intensive, innovation-focused, or health care transformation environment.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary collaborations involving academic, clinical, industry, governmental, community, or philanthropic partners.
  • Knowledge of health care delivery, health policy, population health, health equity, or related fields aligned with the Center's mission.
  • Additional training or education in business, health systems administration, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience in a startup, growth-stage, or rapidly evolving research and development environment is highly desirable.

Pay Range

Minimum $174,200.00, Midpoint $217,800.00, Maximum $261,400.00
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
