Faculty - School of Medical Imaging and Therapeutics - Clinical Educator - Echocardiography

The School of Medical Imaging and Therapeutics seeks a full-time faculty member to work in collaboration with BIDMC as a clinical educator in order to deliver high quality learning experiences and education for students in the Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Echocardiography program. The faculty member will engage in teaching, service, and scholarship activities, and works collaboratively with colleagues across the University, BIDMC, as well as with the Echocardiography Program Director, the School of Medical Imaging and Therapeutics Dean, and Technical Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology at BIDMC.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing clinical education at BIDMC in conjunction with teaching classroom, lab, and online courses. Subject matters will include adult echocardiography, associated pathophysiology, patient care and professional standards.

The successful candidate will work 4 days per week at BIDMC performing the duties of a cardiac sonographer through mentoring and supervising the education of up to 6 students per semester. Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

• Perform all duties of a cardiac sonographer at BIDMC.
• Supervise and support multiple MCPHS DMS students simultaneously during their clinical rotations at BIDMC as their primary point of contact. This includes teaching/reinforcing: scanning techniques and measurement guidelines, adherence of protocol, preliminary reporting, and recognizing pathology and adapting scanning methods accordingly.
• Follows BIDMC echo related policies (i.e saline contrast studies, UEA utilization, urgent/critical findings).
• Attends all BIDMC echo lab staff meetings and all leadership meeting pertaining to education/student development.
• Assist in the development of guidelines and standards to assure continuity between the clinical setting and the DMS program.
• Deliver didactic, laboratory and/or experiential instruction via multiple formats (in-person, online, or in a ‘blended’ format) in the echocardiography program.
• Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria.
• Assist the dean, program director, clinical coordinator and program faculty in maintaining programmatic accreditation, the clinical manual, and the clinical rules
• Provide engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
• Participate in service activities; serve on committees; serve on regional, state, or national organization committees and volunteer activities; represent the program and University in/at community functions; attend School and institutional activities such as Commencement and ceremonies; and support student activities such as health fairs and service projects.
• Participate in scholarship resulting in conference presentations, publishable manuscripts, peer-reviewed instructional materials, or other outcomes consistent with expectations for scholarly activities described in the Faculty Manual.
• Use the University’s learning management system to post syllabus, assignments and other materials and to communicate with students.
• Advise and assist students through office hours or scheduled appointments, by phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms.
• Provide service including student mentoring, ongoing course development, and assessment.
• Attend and participate in monthly School and Department meetings, University ceremonies, and other major events, and serves as a member of University, School and/or Department committees, as assigned.
• Contribute to periodic reviews and revisions of departmental course offerings.
• Maintain advanced knowledge in discipline and areas of expertise.
• Build and maintain relationships with professional organizations involved with the healthcare sector. Maintains membership and involvement in American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).
• Assess the on a regular basis clinical students using MCPHS protocols, forms and time table

• Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor(s)

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
• RDCS or RCS credential, Advanced Cardiac Sonographer(ACS) preferred
• BLS certification
• Minimum of 5 years of work experience in echocardiography
• Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at the college/university level preferred
• Minimum of 3 years of teaching of students in the clinical setting preferred
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Evidence of teaching excellence

Physical Requirements:

• Work on campus requires sitting, standing and walking as part of classroom instruction.
• Must be able to actively work with students in a lab setting moving between students imaging bays through-out a lab.
• Work in the clinical site required sitting, standing, scanning and walking as part of a normal clinical operation
• Must be able to use technology, such as typing and manipulating a mouse/mouse pad
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 lbs.
