Gunderson Dettmer has an opening for a Fund Data Specialist in our Boston office. The Fund Data Specialist is responsible for collecting, organizing, cleaning, and analyzing large sets of fund and CRM data in order to extract meaningful insights about fund closings, capital commitments, fund terms, GP/LP relationships, and investor and competitor activity in the venture and growth equity market.  The position is responsible for data stewardship and ensuring data accuracy and integrity by managing databases, establishing data conversion processes, and presenting findings in a clear format to support informed decision-making for Firm attorneys. Key responsibilities include data collection, data quality checks, data transformation, database management, and report generation.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Gathering data from various sources, including internal DMS systems, attorneys, and utilizing legal AI tools to extract data from documents, as well as third-party investor and market data sources such as PitchBook, Preqin, and S&P Capital IQ. 

  • Identifying and correcting errors, inconsistencies, and missing data to ensure data quality across the fund lifecycle. 

  • Manipulating and structuring data into a usable format for analysis, including data aggregation, filtering, and normalization. 

  • Developing and maintaining processes to collect and maintain data.

  • Performing statistical analysis, identifying trends and patterns, and generating reports to visualize data insights. 

  • Creating charts, graphs, and dashboards to effectively communicate data findings to stakeholders. 

  • Proactively recommend improving methods to improve data quality standards and ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations. 

  • Working with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and provide data-driven solutions.

  • Building and maintaining a taxonomy for funds work (e.g., fund vehicles, GPs/managers, LP investors, service providers, fund terms and side letters) so matter, CRM, and market data are consistently tagged and reportable across systems.

  • Tracking market and competitive signals relevant to the funds practice (new fund launches and closings, LP allocations, lateral partner moves, and competitor counsel on fund and portfolio-company matters) and packaging them into recurring reports for practice leadership and business development.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

  • Bachelor's degree in information management, data analytics, computer science, finance, economics, or a similar field, or equivalent work experience.

  • A minimum of three years of experience as a data analyst, business intelligence analyst, knowledge/matter data specialist, or comparable data-focused role (fund formation paralegal or investor-relations analyst experience considered equivalent when combined with clear data/analytics work).

  • Prior experience as a fund formation or other paralegal, investor-relations analyst, fund administration analyst, or business intelligence / research analyst in a professional services or investment firm environment preferred.

REQUIREMENTS 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. 

  • Ability to work independently on projects with strong attention to detail and report-writing skills. 

  • In-depth knowledge of data retrieval and storage systems.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and verify data from multiple formats.

  • A working knowledge of data analysis tools including SQL, Python, Microsoft Excel, Tableau, and/or Power BI.

  • Knowledge of database systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aderant, and familiarity with legal, CRM, and market-data platforms such as iManage, Intapp, Microsoft Dynamics (or another CRM), PitchBook, and Preqin.

  • Strong data cleaning and manipulation techniques including data transformation, data wrangling, data cleansing.

  • Strong statistical analysis knowledge and understand the statistical methods to interpret data.

  • Ability to identify and resolve data quality issues.

  • Strong communications skills in order to effectively present complex data insights to non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to work overtime. 

Preferred Requirements:  

  • Familiarity with venture capital and growth equity fund formation process.

  • Working knowledge of core fund structures and terms (e.g., GP/LP, management fees, carried interest, side letters, AIVs, GP-led secondaries) and of the LP/investor landscape (institutional LPs, funds of funds, family offices, emerging managers).

  • Prior experience with law-firm or professional-services data platforms (e.g., Aderant/Elite, iManage, Intapp) and with third-party investor data sources (PitchBook, Preqin, S&P Capital IQ).

The expected starting salary for this position is $80,000 - $100,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
