GBH News broadcasts and streams local, national, and international news, produces local talk shows, and publishes a wide variety of locally sourced news online. Job Overview
GBH News is seeking an energetic, curious, and enterprising reporter to join our newsroom on a Wednesday–Sunday schedule, covering general assignment news with a partial focus on higher education.
This is a high-impact role for a journalist who is a true news hound — someone who doesn’t wait for assignments but consistently pitches, pursues, and delivers original reporting that serves our audiences across platforms.
The ideal candidate is proactive, deeply engaged with the news, and skilled at spotting stories before they break. You are comfortable owning your ideas, moving quickly in a fast-paced environment, and collaborating with editors and colleagues to elevate your work.
You’ll cover breaking news, accountability reporting, and enterprise stories across Greater Boston and beyond. This role requires strong storytelling, source-building, and the ability to file quickly and accurately for digital and radio.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pitch, research, and report general assignment news stories, including enterprise and breaking news, across multiple beats, with a partial focus on higher education.
- Cover breaking news, spot developments, and move quickly to report and file across platforms.
- Report, write, and produce stories for digital and radio, including newscasts, web posts and vertical video.
- Conduct interviews, gather sound, and deliver clear, accurate, and compelling journalism under deadline pressure.
- Collaborate with editors, producers, and other newsroom teams to shape coverage and elevate stories across broadcast and digital/social platforms.
- Build and maintain sources within the communities you cover.

SKILLSET
- Well versed across multiple beats, with a broad understanding of local politics, business, breaking news, and other key coverage areas. Experience covering education, particularly higher education, would be a significant plus
- Demonstrated ability to generate strong story ideas and report independently
- Experience filing on deadline for digital and/or audio platforms
- Solid news judgment and ability to report both breaking and enterprise stories
- Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills
- Ability to work weekends and holidays as news demands
- Familiarity with Boston and New England

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
- 3-5 years of reporting experience in a newsroom environment
