Who is EMPath?
Β
Economic Mobility Pathways (EMPath) is a 200-year Boston-based nonprofit that transforms lives by partnering with families to move out of poverty and provides other organizations with the tools to do the same.Β
As a leading nonprofit innovator that combines direct services, a global learning network, robust research, and advocacy, we offer a wide range of rewarding career opportunities.Β
Our Research & Evaluation (R&E) team sits at the heart of this work, generating the evidence that strengthens our programs, informs our partners, and advances the broader field.
What Youβll Be Doing:
We're hiring a Manager of Data & Program Evaluation to lead EMPath's internal evaluation and data infrastructure. Reporting to the Vice President of Research & Innovation and supervising the R&E Associate, you'll ensure our data systems are well-maintained and well-used, translate program data into insights staff can act on, and build the reproducible reporting structures that make that work sustainable over time.
This is a hands-on technical and deeply collaborative role. The heart of the work is partnering with program and administrative teams (such as Advancement and Advocacy) across the organization β helping staff understand and use data to improve their programs, facilitating quarterly data review sessions, co-developing metrics, and building the kind of ongoing relationships that are central to our focus on continuous learning and improvement. You'll also manage our participant data system (Bonterra/Apricot), oversee our annual participant survey, and develop code-based approaches to facilitate our analysis and reporting.Β
Beyond our internal programs, you'll collaborate with R&E leadership to provide data and evaluation technical assistance to members of our global Exchange network.
EMPath offers a four-day work week. This role is hybrid: two days in our Congress Street office in Boston's Seaport district, two days remote. Ideal start date June 1.
What You Bring to the Role:
Required:
- 3β5 years of experience in program evaluation, applied data analysis, or a closely related role
- Proficiency in R (preferred) or Python β you'll own and maintain our analytics codebase, including parameterized R Markdown/Quarto reports and reproducible analysis scripts
- Advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of tools, including Excel (as well as Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint)Β
- Experience with a participant or constituent data management system (Bonterra/Apricot, ETO, Salesforce, or similar)
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills and a solid grounding in evaluation design and statistical concepts
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple workstreams and deadlines
- Ability to communicate data findings clearly to non-technical audiences, in writing and in person
- At least 1β2 years of supervisory, team leadership, or project ownership experience
- A bachelor's degree in a related field; master's preferred
- Commitment to data equity and to EMPath's mission
Β
Preferred:
- Experience with project management tools, such as AsanaΒ
- Familiarity with BI or dashboard platforms (R Shiny, Tableau, Power BI)
- Background in nonprofit, human services, or economic mobility settings
- Experience supporting a partner network with data capacity building
- Proficiency in Spanish or Haitian Creole
- Experience with GitHub or version control
Ways to Stand Out:
- Analytical and detail-oriented β brings rigor to data work.
- Clear communicator β translates complex findings into plain language for program staff, partners, and funders; writes and presents with confidence.
- Equity-minded β integrates anti-bias approaches throughout the data cycle and centers the experiences of the people EMPath serves.
- Collaborative and service-oriented β builds trust with program colleagues, Exchange partners, and organizational leadership; approaches data support with a "customer service" mindset.
- Organized and self-directed β manages multiple concurrent projects, sets priorities, and follows through with minimal supervision.
- Growth-oriented β brings curiosity, a willingness to learn, and flexibility as organizational needs and the field evolve.
- Good sense of humor β we take our mission seriously and ourselves lightly.
