Job Summary
Under the supervision of a licensed clinician, the Ophthalmic Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality eye care in an outpatient clinic. This role combines hands-on patient care, clinical testing, ophthalmic procedures, and administrative responsibilities to help ensure a smooth and positive patient experience.Does this position require Patient Care?

Essential Functions
-Perform a variety of vision and ocular tests, imaging, and assessments to prepare patients for comprehensive eye examinations.
-Identify and administer diagnostic eye drops as directed by the clinician and in accordance with established protocols.
-Assist the ophthalmologist with minor in-office procedures, including injections and cryotherapy, under appropriate supervision and direction.
-Maintain exam rooms with adequate medical and ophthalmic supplies.
-Measure and document vital signs as directed for procedures and other clinical needs.
-Clean, calibrate, and perform basic maintenance of ophthalmic equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.
-Properly handle, store, and transport specimens, instruments, and medications according to established procedures.
-Support administrative functions, including patient call triage and in-basket management, as assigned.
-Provide cross-coverage at other ophthalmology services and locations as needed.
-Follow hospital policies and procedures, applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and Joint Commission standards.

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required

Licenses and Credentials

Experience
- Previous experience in an ophthalmic or healthcare setting preferred.
- 0ā1 year of experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology, or the ability to learn and apply medical terminology in the clinical setting.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and families.
- Ability to provide age-appropriate care and support based on patientsā developmental, mental, and physical needs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing needs, and remain organized in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic environment.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, clinicians, and other members of the care team.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to make appropriate decisions within the scope of the role.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite, or the ability to learn new systems and technology.
