SUMMARY        

Assist the Safety/ Environmental Manager to develop, implement, and evaluate corporate loss control and environmental policies, procedures, and associated training to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

 SAFETY

Must comply with Company safety rules and OSHA standards.  Must be physically and medically qualified to wear required personal protective equipment as prescribed under OSHA standards

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Support and conduct training to ensure compliance with all safety & environmental regulations, permitted conditions and corporate policies. 
  • Routinely conduct internal safety / loss control & environmental audits of facilities and operations to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Perform daily safety & environmental compliance walks on Navy vessels with Navy and/or Government representatives.  Facilitate corrective action as needed.
  • Participate in OSHA Recordable Safety Committee meetings and assist the Risk Manager with employee return to work programs and workers’ compensation cost containment efforts.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene & environmental monitoring, sampling, measurements, and assessments (chemical, physical, biological, health stressors, etc.) as needed.
  • Monitor operations performed by sub-contractors and vendors for compliance with established safety & environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the research and assimilation of all relevant safety & environmental information for the purpose of modifying, updating, and clarifying company safety / loss control & environmental policies, procedures and programs.
  • Assist in the evaluation of all new safety & environmental related materials, equipment and consumable products prior to release for company use.
  • Conduct investigations into accidents, incidents, and property damage for identification of root cause and corrective action to prevent recurrence.
  • Prepare and present audit and inspection reports for management review.
  • Assist Safety/Environmental Manager as needed, to ensure corporate compliance with all local, state and federal regulatory requirements or permitted conditions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Safety /Environmental Manager.

 EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety, Environmental, Engineering or equivalent. 
  • 1 to 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Basic level experience with Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

 LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to stand (minimum of two hours while conducting regular work duties), walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on board ships.  The employee will frequently use both hands to grasp rails while climbing, to hold and carry tools and equipment, to operate tools and machinery.  The employee must be able to respond to voice or visual commands.  The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds on a consistent (daily) basis. 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT  

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job: wet or humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places; exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold or extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The employee must be able to work in confined spaces.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
