Initiates and ensures the quality of pharmacy and drug distribution services in all patient care areas. Assumes direct responsibility of direct medication distribution, IV admixtures, safety and efficacy of prescribed drug therapy in accordance with laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy by the appropriate state and federal agencies.

Job Description:

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Emergency Department Pharmacy Service is growing, and we are recruiting two Overnight ED Pharmacists to support our expanding clinical coverage model. These positions provide essential overnight pharmacist presence for all ED patients, including high-acuity boarders. Positions follow a 7-on/7-off schedule, offering extended time off every other week. Hours of the position are 10:00pm to 8:00am.

Key responsibilities include emergency response support, high-risk medication management, and serving as the primary overnight medication expert for ED providers and nursing. The overnight ED pharmacists will also help ensure continuity across shifts and collaborate closely with the ED and inpatient pharmacy teams.

1. Practices in accordance with the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, including but not limited to Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Maintains certification and credentials in accordance with the Board of Registration and adheres to institutional policies and procedures. 

2. Reviews and verifies medication orders with consideration, including but not limited to the following patient specific parameters: diagnosis, weight/body surface area, age, allergies, organ function, laboratory values, medication duplication, drug interactions. Clarifies orders deemed to be inappropriate, incomplete, or otherwise unclear with the prescriber in a timely manner.

3. Documents and communicates pertinent information and discussion with the healthcare team and pharmacy staff to ensure continuity of care.

4. Provides drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.  

5. Checks and verifies sterile and non-sterile medications.

6. Supervises the activities of students, technicians, and residents within the pharmacist area of practice. 

7. Promotes a culture of patient safety by submitting medication related events and near misses.

8. Completes daily pharmacy surveillance tool monitoring, including follow-up and documentation, as well as other daily patient care initiatives and relevant reports.

9. Works collaboratively with all pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy personnel. Upholds a culture of respect and teamwork across the Pharmacy Department.

10. Precepts pharmacy students, resident rotations, and resident-led quality improvement projects. May serve as Residency Program Coordinator or Residency Program Director

11. Regularly participates in department initiatives including but not limited to supporting formulary stewardship, presenting new medication requests at Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, creating and maintaining policies and procedures, conducting assessments of workflows, and/or developing departmental tools and resources.

12. Supports a specific core area of practice through interdisciplinary education, ongoing specialty training and as a resource for Pharmacy staff.

13. Updates clinical guidelines and presents hospital wide educational initiatives.

14. Serves on hospital interdisciplinary committees or workgroups to improve process and quality outcomes.

15. Supports IRB-approved research activities, medication use evaluations, or cost-savings initiatives.

16. Other duties as assigned

1. PGY1 + 1-3 years OR PYG2 OR 3-5 years of experience in clinical specialty area

Pay Range:

$61.53 - $78.04

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
