The Lead Finishing Operator is responsible for performing a variety of duties to set up and operate equipment used in the post-print label finishing process while providing daily leadership and support to the finishing team. This position serves as a working lead, ensuring production schedules, quality standards, safety requirements, and department objectives are achieved through effective communication, coordination, training, and problem-solving. The Lead Finishing Operator actively operates finishing equipment, assists team members as needed, and acts as a resource for the department to promote efficient and consistent operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Review job tickets, specifications, and production schedules to ensure customer requirements are understood and production priorities are communicated to the finishing team.
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot finishing equipment to produce quality products in accordance with customer specifications.
  • Operate computer systems to select, modify, and maintain programs as required for production.
  • Coordinate workflow within the department to maximize productivity, minimize downtime, and ensure timely completion of customer orders.
  • Provide guidance, support, and day-to-day direction to Finishing Operators and helpers while promoting teamwork and accountability.
  • Train and cross-train employees on finishing equipment, department processes, quality standards, and safe work practices.
  • Contact Quality Assurance as required to obtain approval to run jobs and assist in resolving quality concerns.
  • Monitor product quality throughout production and inspect work for errors including color, register, dog-ears, scum, cutting accuracy, and overall conformance to specifications.
  • Set scales, cutter side guides, and other equipment adjustments required to maintain quality and efficiency standards.
  • Check cutting operations and equipment performance during production and make adjustments as necessary to maintain specifications.
  • Coordinate with other departments and operators to ensure finishing operations meet downstream production requirements.
  • Assist with production scheduling, prioritization of work, and communication of shift goals and operational issues.
  • Complete load tags, tally sheets, final job tickets, daily production sheets, and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Operate hand trucks, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment to move product, supplies, and finished goods as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of department supplies and communicate material or tooling needs to supervision.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment for optimal operation, including adjustments, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Promote and ensure compliance with established facility safety policies, procedures, housekeeping requirements, and company standards.
  • Treat all associates respectfully and professionally while maintaining company values and code of ethics.
  • Serve as a resource for problem solving, process improvement, and continuous improvement initiatives within the finishing department.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of finishing, converting, cutting, or related manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Previous leadership, training, mentoring, or lead experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of finishing equipment, production processes, quality standards, and workflow coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret job tickets, specifications, production reports, and other operational documents.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret production data and reports.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to train employees and communicate expectations effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, coordinate activities, and support multiple production demands.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Frequent reaching, talking, and hearing.
  • Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
