Summary:

Scotty’s Contracting and Stone is seeking a motivated Survey Technician to join our Survey team to perform duties in the Heavy Civil/Construction industry. This hands-on position offers the opportunity to apply and expand surveying knowledge in a fast-paced construction environment. As a Survey Technician, you will work closely with experienced survey professionals to perform field data collection, construction stakeout, and layout tasks in support of mass excavation, utilities, and paving operations. You will play a key role in ensuring accurate site layout and measurements, contributing directly to the success of project execution. The role is performed under the guidance of the Survey Manager, with opportunities to take on more complex responsibilities as proficiency and experience grow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform surveying and layout work on heavy civil construction projects.
  • Conduct field data collection and site stakeout for construction and design purposes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and project plans.
  • Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including GPS units, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and support field crews with technical surveying needs.
  • Assist in the preparation of survey documentation, reports, and records.


Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Working knowledge of surveying principles, construction layout, and measurement techniques.
  • Proficiency with survey instruments such as total stations, GPS, and levels.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to interpret and apply technical information.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed.


Physical Requirements:

  • Work Environment: Must be able to work outdoors in a heavy civil construction setting, with exposure to uneven terrain, dust, dirt, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Proximity Hazards: Must remain alert and work safely around active equipment, moving vehicles, and public traffic zones.
  • Climbing: Must have the physical capability to safely climb on and off of mobile equipment that is greater than 6 feet off the ground on uneven terrain multiple times daily on uneven terrain.
  • Balance: Including standing and walking on extremely slick and uneven surfaces while
  • Vision: 20/40 corrected vision to see moving safety hazards, moving equipment, vehicles, and
  • Hearing: Corrected to hear verbal safety warnings and
  • Awkward positions: Ability to transition between standing, sitting, and kneeling as needed during inspections or task direction
  • Lifting: Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs. of survey equipment and materials.
