Position Summary/Purpose:
Purpose of this position is to perform general maintenance work that is required for the proper, orderly and effective maintenance of all town road systems under the immediate direction of the Crew Chief, Foreman or Superintendent of Streets. Specific instructions are given on new duties, but once standard operations are learned, employees are expected to work without constant direction.
Essential functions and Responsibilities:

- Performs daily functions as assigned for the purpose of road maintenance and other projects.
- Cut, clean up and dispose of windstorm debris and roadside trash and delivers to Transfer Station.
- Plow snow, sand and salt highways as required by storm conditions and shovel sidewalks by hand.
- Performs minor maintenance of trucks such as greasing, washing, waxing, etc.
- Mow grassÂ
- Operates medium and small equipment
- Repair & replace traffic signs.
- Installs drainage components (pipe, backfill, catch basins, etc.)
- Shovels & rakes dirt, stone, asphalt & curbing
- Cut wood, stumps and branches
- Cleans catch basins
- Rake out loam & plant grass and trees
- Operate saw cutter for asphalt and concrete
Other Functions:
- Assist other departmental staff as needed
- Perform related work as required
Supervision:
Supervision Received:Â Works under the immediate supervision of the operator or crew chief. Also receives direction from the foreman, Superintendent of Streets and/or Director of Public Works.Â

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Education Training and Experience:Â
Graduation from high school or GED, four (4) years’ experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid CDL State of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, class B minimum with tanker endorsement.
Knowledge, Ability and Skills:
Knowledge: of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.Â
Ability:Â to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Skill:Â in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment: to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Â
Machines Tools and Equipment Used:
Medium: 40,000 GVW CDL trucks, 1-ton dump trucks, vac/jet truck, tractor, roller, asphalt recycler, sweeper
Small:Â Chain saws, wood chipper, air compressor, shovels, rakes, lawn mowers, weed trimmer, jack hammer, power blower, plate compactor, jumping jack compactor, hand tamp
Materials Handled: Pipe, catch basins, block & brick, hot & cold asphalt, stone, gravel, sand, salt, dirt, tree limbs, leaves, paint, chemicals, solvents, trash, metal, cement.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. May be exposed to natural elements to include insects, poison ivy, etc.
