ER/ICU Veterinary Technician Supervisor
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and team-oriented ER/ICU Veterinary Technician Supervisor to oversee daily operations within our emergency and intensive care department. This role combines hands-on clinical work with leadership responsibilities, ensuring exceptional patient care, efficient workflow management, and staff development in a fast-paced specialty hospital environment.
The ideal candidate is a strong leader, highly organized, clinically skilled, and passionate about supporting both patients and team members.
Key Responsibilities
Department Management & Clinical Coordination
  • Supervise daily ER/ICU clinical workflow, ensuring timely patient assessments, diagnostics, treatments, and follow-up care.
  • Oversee technician workflow across hospital departments to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Monitor staffing coverage throughout shifts, including lunch breaks and department support as needed.
  • Reallocate staff appropriately based on patient volume and hospital needs.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Operations Manager to ensure proper equipment, medication, and supply availability.
Scheduling & Staffing
  • Create and manage weekly technician schedules for the department.
  • Ensure proper staffing levels are maintained hospital-wide.
  • Coordinate coverage for call-outs and open shifts using appropriately trained staff.
  • Submit department schedules and on-call schedules one month in advance.
  • Assist with completion of holiday scheduling for hospital departments, including MRI and surgery.
Staff Leadership & Development
  • Lead, mentor, and support veterinary technicians and assistants in a collaborative and respectful environment.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for nursing and technician concerns.
  • Oversee onboarding and continued training of ER/ICU staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive coaching and professional development support.
  • Address performance or behavioral concerns in accordance with hospital disciplinary protocols.
  • Maintain and enforce hospital protocols, including workflow and cleanliness standards.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
  • Ensure all patient care activities align with hospital standards, safety guidelines, and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records.
  • Coordinate maintenance and calibration of ER/ICU equipment.
  • Enforce safety procedures to protect patients, clients, and staff.
Client Service & Communication
  • Partner with veterinarians and client service representatives to provide timely client communication and support.
  • Advocate for patient comfort, well-being, and compassionate care at all times.
Operational Efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency and patient care processes.
  • Monitor staffing hours and overtime while maintaining quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership regarding inventory management and budget-conscious resource usage.
  • Attend required meetings and administrative sessions.
Position Requirements
  • Must be an LVT with ER and/or ICU experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Must be comfortable working on the hospital floor in a hands-on technician role.
  • Strong communication, leadership, multitasking, and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced emergency environment.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Must regularly check and respond to work communications.
Scheduling Expectations
  • One weekend shift per week required.
  • Participation in the hospital on-call rotation is required:
    • 2 daytime on-call shifts per month
    • 2 overnight on-call shifts per month
  • Holiday rotation required:
    • Winter Holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day
    • Summer Holidays: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day
  • Administrative time will be provided during the work week for meetings and supervisory duties.
