Job Summary

Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to lead contractual and rapid prototyping programs in accordance with the latest version of MIL-STD-882, Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) 385-17, and applicable standards per government direction.   This position is based out of our Bridgeton facility and will have the option to work an in person or hybrid schedule.  This candidate is responsible for leading a safety assignment throughout a program’s life cycle and collaborating with various disciplines.

Job Responsibilities

Documentation:

  • Capture safety analysis and findings in the form of the following government deliverables:
    • System Safety Program Plan (SSPP)
    • Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)
    • Hazard Tracking System (HTS)
    • Safety Assessment Report (SAR)
    • Software Systems Level of Rigor (LOR)
    • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

Customer / Supplier Interaction:

  • Direct subcontractors and communicate with and flow-down required safety deliverables
  • Present findings and propose solutions leading to risk mitigation or issue remediation
  • Attend classified and unclassified test events and discuss safety measures between partner companies and customers
  • Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable 
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems, and services

Compliance:

  • Follow the methodologies within MIL-STD-882E or other applicable government standards
  • Review engineering changes or mishaps and support implementation efforts
  • Assess and track mitigation of software and firmware related hazards
  • Work with other engineering disciplines to ensure the customer needs are met
  • Execute the systems engineering process including architectural design, system integration, and verification and validation. 
  • Ensure systems are designed, operated, and maintained safely, complying with relevant regulations and standards to minimize risk

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems
  • Lead and direct the work of others as assigned
  • Report of progress and status regularly
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
  • Participates in preparation of less-complex proposals
  • May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
  • Lead less-experienced engineers
  • Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Attend appropriate engineering, customer, or business meetings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field, and a minimum of 5 years of system safety engineering experience
  • Familiarity with Software Safety in accordance with MIL-STD-882E, AMCOM 385-17, and / or the Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook
  • Ability to work multiple programs
  • Proficient in technical writing to assist with the preparation of reports of complex systems
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products
  • Willing and able to travel (approximately 20%) to support program events (tests, program reviews, etc.) and training activities
  • Ability to lead a technical group independently 

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

 

The salary range for this position is $87,911.00/year- $114,285.00/year for the state of Illinois.  This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for: annual performance-based bonuses, equity awards, and overtime pay (for non-exempt employees as applicable.
