The purpose of this position is to support laboratory facilities/equipment, develop/optimize experimental procedures, and conduct experiments related to the flammability of materials, fire hazard evaluation of li-ion batteries, fire suppression, and explosion protection under the supervision of senior research scientists. Key responsibilities are:

  • Perform scientific experiments related to material flammability, fire dynamics, li-ion battery hazards, fire suppression, water spray characterization, and explosion protection to obtain accurate and reliable data.
  • Collaborate with senior scientists to design, set up, and conduct experiments.
  • Develop specific technical procedures and coordinate the purchase of necessary components, equipment, sensors, and supplies related to assigned projects.
  • Design, fabricate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain test equipment, sensors, and instrumentation, for reliable measurements of temperature, velocity, gas concentration, pressure, heat flux, energy release, etc. during controlled experiments.
  • Instrument and execute experiments using a range of equipment, including Fire Propagation Apparatus (FPA), Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC), battery calorimeter, and others.
  • Perform initial data analysis and contribute to the interpretation of experimental results.
  • Ensure all experiments are conducted following safety protocols and best practices.

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical fields, with 3 years related work experience in scientific or industrial labs or technical fabrication/machining/instrumentation environments.

Job qualifications include:

  • Good understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing principles necessary to design and conduct scientific experiments.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical laboratory skills.
  • Fundamental technical knowledge of combustion, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, etc.
  • Experience with advanced measurement diagnostics, including laser technology.
  • Familiarity/experience with various machine shop tools/equipment.
  • Computer literacy – data acquisition using NI LabVIEW software, programming using Python or MATLAB, experience with computer design software such as Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Knowledge of personal and area safety practices in a laboratory environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to provide innovative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
