The Mental Health Specialist is a member of the multidisciplinary psychiatric patient treatment team. He/she implements clinical care responsibilitiesĀ in accordance withĀ inpatient psychiatry department policies,Ā proceduresĀ and standards under the supervision of a psychiatric registered nurse. The Mental Health Specialist must be able toĀ demonstrateĀ the knowledge and skills necessary to provide careĀ appropriate toĀ patients agedĀ 18 and above. The Mental Health Specialist mustĀ possessĀ the knowledge and ability to gather data reflective of the patient’s age and developmental level inĀ determiningĀ treatment needs.Ā

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:Ā 

  • Participates in crisis interventionĀ usingĀ verbal and physical de-escalation of potentially unsafe or aggressive behavior per training technique and seclusion/restraint policies/proceduresĀ 

  • Assists RN in administering physical care and personal hygiene measures to assigned patients as appropriateĀ 

  • Leads and co-leads therapeutic process oriented and activity groupsĀ 

  • Provides patient/family education and supportsĀ regardingĀ milieu programming, goals of hospitalization and therapeutic interventions in support of meeting those goalsĀ 

  • Gives observation and inputĀ regardingĀ the patient to Nurse Manager/Charge RN when unable to communicate directly at treatment team meetingsĀ 

  • Continuously evaluates patient progress toward goalsĀ clearly evidentĀ in documentation, participation in treatment planning, shift report and report to charge RNĀ 

  • Conducts and/orĀ assistsĀ RN with patient search for contraband, vital signs, height,Ā weightĀ and orientation to the unitĀ 

  • Conducts patient safety checks as assigned toĀ monitorĀ both individual patient safety as well as unit mood and rising acuity concerns in the milieuĀ 

  • IdentifiesĀ issues related to progress towards discharge or any barriers to dischargeĀ 

  • Vital signs, intake and output, activity of daily living statusĀ 

  • Gives observation and inputĀ regardingĀ the patient to Nurse Manager/Charge RN when unable to communicate directly at treatment team meetingsĀ 

  • Shares observations and pertinent information with social worker, clinical colleagues, and patient family/caregiversĀ

REQUIRED EDUCATION:Ā 

  • High School Degree or EquivalentĀ Ā 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Ā 

  • Patient care skillsĀ acquiredĀ through 1 year ofĀ previousĀ direct patient care experience preferredĀ 

Ā 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:Ā 

  • Demonstrated skill in developing helpful relationships with patients,Ā familiesĀ and staffĀ 

  • Ability to use a variety of medical equipment necessary in the delivery of quality patient careĀ 

  • Has the skills and knowledge to provide care to the age groups of the population served including:Ā 

  • knowledge of growth and developmentĀ 

  • provide age-appropriate communicationĀ 

Compensation Range:

$17.88- $26.57

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
