About the role
As a Packaging Engineer at Mytra, you will join our Supply Chain team to design, develop, and own the packaging systems that keep Mytra's hardware moving safely across our entire network. Reporting to the Logistics Manager, you will own end-to-end packaging across all four material paths: inbound components from our global supply base to our manufacturing site in Brisbane, CA; completed systems outbound from Brisbane to customer sites; components and assemblies moving direct from suppliers to customer sites; and spare parts and service materials cycling to and from customer sites in the field.
This is a build role. Mytra's packaging standards and processes need to be defined for scale. You'll design them from scratch - working with external design and supply vendors, defining and running qualification testing, and building the operational loops that keep packaging cycling efficiently as deployment volume grows. You'll work closely with the Logistics Manager, warehousing, engineering, and manufacturing teams to make sure what you develop is grounded in reality: carrier constraints, parts materials, construction site conditions, international customs requirements, and the realities of field service environments.
What you’ll do:
- Own packaging design and development across all four material paths - inbound components from global suppliers to Brisbane; completed systems outbound to customer deployment sites; structural components shipping direct from suppliers to active construction sites; and spare parts and service kits moving to and from customer sites in the field.
- Lead the returnable packaging program end-to-end - defining standards, outsourcing design and supply to dedicated suppliers, building and managing return loops, and scaling the system as deployment volume grows.
- Qualify packaging through testing - selecting and executing appropriate test protocols (ISTA, ASTM) across drop, vibration, compression, and climate scenarios to validate that hardware arrives undamaged across all transit modes and environments.
- Engage early in product development - partnering with logistics, sustainment, warehouse and manufacturing to define packaging requirements during design, influencing design-for-shipping decisions before they become expensive constraints downstream.
- Source and manage packaging suppliers - identifying & qualify suppliers for custom foam, custom crating, structural containers, and returnable totes; holding partners accountable on lead time, cost, and quality.
- Develop and maintain packaging documentation - specifications, BOMs, packing instructions, and labeling requirements for all SKUs across all four material paths.
- Design field service packaging kits - spare parts packaging, tool cases, and returnable containers built for technician use at customer sites; balancing protection, usability, and return efficiency.
- Track packaging performance and iterate - monitoring damage rates, return loop efficiency, and cost per shipment across the network; using data to drive continuous improvement.
- Partner with logistics and 3PLs - ensuring packaging specifications align with carrier requirements, freight modes, and customs and import/export documentation requirements.
Ideal Candidates
- Have 4–7 years of experience in industrial or transit packaging engineering - with hands-on experience designing and qualifying packaging for complex hardware: robotics, mechanical assemblies, precision equipment, or similarly demanding products.
- Have designed and managed returnable packaging programs - including outsourcing design and supply, building return loops operationally, and scaling the system as volumes grow.
- Are experienced working to international packaging and shipping standards (ISTA, ASTM, AIAG) and can select and execute appropriate test protocols for different product and transit profiles.
- Have worked directly with packaging suppliers and fabricators - sourcing and managing custom foam, custom crating, and structural containers from vendor identification through ongoing performance management.
- Understand the logistics constraints that shape packaging decisions: freight mode, carrier rules, handling conditions and lay down space at destination, and customs and import/export requirements.
- Are rigorous about documentation and standardization - comfortable building specs, BOMs, and packing procedures from scratch in a way that operations and logistics teams can execute without the engineer in the room.
- Communicate clearly across cross-functional teams - engineering, logistics, manufacturing, and field teams all need to understand and use what you build.
Nice to have:
- Experience packaging oversized or heavy-lift components - large steel structures, fabricated assemblies, or industrial equipment - including custom crating and blocking/bracing for flatbed or breakbulk shipments.
- Background in field service packaging - spare parts kitting, technician kit design, and returnable totes built for field use.
- Familiarity with packaging sustainability requirements - returnable system design, material certifications, and regional regulatory compliance.
- Experience with ERP or PLM systems for packaging BOM and specification management.
