Job Summary

The Quality Control Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, and documenting the quality of utility poles throughout the manufacturing and preservative treating process. This position ensures compliance with customer specifications, industry standards, and applicable requirements such as those from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), American Wood Protection Association, and customer purchase specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Pole Inspection

  • Inspect incoming Raw log material and finished utility poles for size, straightness, sweep, knots, decay, splits and other defects.
  • Verify pole classification, dimensions, and lengths according to customer specifications.
  • Ensure poles meet the grading requirements.

Preservative Treatment (QC)

  • Monitor preservative treatment operations.
  • Verify treatment schedules, cylinder pressures, vacuum cycles, and treatment times.
  • Perform or oversee boring inspections to determine preservative penetration.
  • Calculate and document preservative retention levels according to AWPA and RUS requirements.
  • Collect and maintain treatment samples and laboratory records.

Testing and documentation

  • Complete inspection reports, treatment records, and quality documentation.
  • Maintain traceability of treated pole lots.
  • Assist with audits and customer inspections.

Compliance and Standard

  • RUS utility Poles Specifications.
  • AWPA Standards
  • Identify non-conforming material and initiate corrective action.

Production Support

  • Work closely with treating plant operators and production personnel.
  • Provide feedback regarding quality issues and process improvements.
  • Assist with root cause investigations and corrective action items.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and standards.
  • Preservative penetration and retention testing requirements.
  • Ability to use measuring instruments and inspection tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Perform tasks such as walking, climbing, or standing for long periods of time. 
  • Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs.
  • Ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time
  • Must be comfortable working around loud equipment.
  • Able to work while in a harness at heights over 4 feet.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs throughout work shift 
  • Work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely collect pole borings and treatment samples.

  • Audit performance.
  • Customer quality complaints.
  • Treatment penetration and retention compliance percentages.
