This internship offers nursing students an exciting opportunity to transition into clinical practice! Student nurses selected for this internship will fulfill the role of a student nurse technician. Upon fulfilling minimum requirements, additional benefits of this role include a guaranteed interview for the Bristol Health Graduate Nurse Residency Program at the conclusion of the internship, mentoring from a Professional Development Coordinator, and nursing shadow experiences. The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) performs a wide variety of patient care tasks utilizing a Patient Focused Care model. Follows standardized procedures prescribed in a clinical pathway, including activities related to direct patient care, diagnostic testing, patient transport and documentation. Works in collaboration with PCAs and RNs to ensure safe, efficient patient care. May perform fundamental clinical skills under the direct observation and guidance of RN. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Performs all patient care safely following Bristol Health policies and procedures. Ensures patient confidentiality and safety at all times. Consistently follows infection control and universal precaution techniques.  Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and families. Consistently utilizes principles of safe lifting and body mechanics. Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers. Joins RN to accept patient report on assignments and all other patient related conferences with the care team. Collaborates with the RN to assess patients, identify problems/needs and formulation of nursing interventions in response. Communicates immediately to the RN all changes in patient conditions and utilizes the emergency response system when needed. Collects and documents data (vital signs, intake/output, etc.) in the patients’ electronic medical record. Follows established procedures in performing selected nursing functions under the supervision of RN. QualificationsEducational / Minimum Requirements: Current matriculation into ADN or BSN nursing program with successful completion of fundamentals nursing skills lab and one semester of clinical practice in the acute care setting. *If selected for an interview, you will be asked to bring a letter of recommendation from a clinical instructor* Must have a High School Diploma or GED and meet the matriculation requirements above. State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: None Bristol Health Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire.  Accucheck and Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. CPR every 2 years.  Additional cross-training as appropriate to perform diverse job duties.  Successfully complete all training programs as determined by the Hospital.  Other unit based competencies/skills as required. Special Requirements: Healthcare Provider CPR from American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer CPR by American Red Cross or other similar programs deemed appropriate by management. Knowledge of basic patient care procedures and medical terminology.  Ability to work as part of a team.  Data entry and documentation skills.  For Inpatient Psychiatric unit: Above requirements and experience working with a psychiatric population which can be violent and aggressive at times. Physical Requirements: Significant walking, bending, stooping, patient lifting and positioning.  Manual dexterity for phlebotomy and data entry.  For Inpatient Psychiatric unit: Above requirements and self-defense techniques and/or physical agility so as to protect oneself while coping with a patient.  Possessing physical strength and agility sufficient to assist with a take down of a violent patient. Work Environment: Normal patient care environment.  Exposure to patient fluids and waste.  Rapid pace and variable environment. Cognitive Requirements: Mental flexibility to perform diverse duties involved in patient care.  Good communication skills, written and oral, and ability to follow written and oral instruction.
