General Statement of Duties
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and direct supervision of the Park Supervisor, the Parks Technician is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of parks, pools, the Larson Ice Center, city owned facilities, and athletic facilities. This includes landscaping, equipment operation, and repairs, as well as coordinating with contractors and maintaining safety standards. The position requires standby duty and the flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid South Dakota Driver’s License
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to obtain a South Dakota Commercial Drivers License
- Must be a United States citizen. This position does not support sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in landscaping, pool maintenance, ice facility operations, or athletic field operations

Major Duties (Essential Function)
- Parks, Pool, and Athletic Facilities
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties, including trash collection, restroom cleaning, and litter removal.
- Operate snowplows and other heavy equipment for snow removal on sidewalks, trails, and driveways.
- Operate and maintain a wide range of equipment, including but not limited to:
- Backhoes, trucks, mowers, chemical sprayers, utility vehicles, payloaders, boom trucks, skid steers, and various attachments.
- Hand tools such as saws, drills, grinders, sanders, shovels, chainsaws, and more.
- Conduct landscaping tasks such as mowing, planting, pruning, and applying herbicides, fertilizers, and pesticides.
- Manage athletic field preparation, including marking lines, turf maintenance, and irrigation system repairs.
- Operate and maintain pool equipment, including filters, pumps, and water chemistry systems.
- Perform minor plumbing, electrical, and construction repairs on facilities and equipment.
- Coordinate and communicate with contractors, such as electricians and plumbers, for specialized repairs or installations.
- Handle sewer maintenance and associated issues as required.
- Perform seasonal maintenance tasks, including leaf collection and application of de-icing materials.
- Larson Ice Center
- Monitor and maintain ice rink compressors and temperature systems to ensure optimal ice quality.
- Operate and maintain the Zamboni ice resurfacer, ensuring proper ice resurfacing schedules.
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties within the facility, including locker rooms, restrooms, and common areas.
- Assist with skate sharpening, skate rentals, and customer service duties during public skating and events.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of facility equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Enforce facility policies and provide on-site supervision during events or shifts.Â
- Assist with the setup and takedown of equipment for hockey games, tournaments, and other events.
Marginal Duties
- Attend training, seminars and workshops as deemed necessary.
- Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards and policies established by the City.
- Perform other job-related duties as deemed necessary and additional duties, tasks, or responsibilities as assigned.
