Position Summary
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the day to day coordination and oversight of all aspects of the NursingÂ
Department in accordance with current Federal, State and local regulations.
Reports to
The Director of Nursing directly reports to the Administrator of the facility where providing Nursing Services toÂ
coordinate nursing specific and clinical programs. The Director of Nurses has a dotted line reporting responsibilityÂ
to the Clinical Services Coordinator assigned to the facility.
Supervises
Supervises administratively all licensed nursing staff, C.N.A.’s, staffing coordinator, medical records coordinatorÂ
and all staff of his/her respective discipline.
Supervision follows all accepted state and federal guidelines for the respective discipline. The DON assumes theÂ
role of the Administrator in their absence.
Director of Nursing Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The DON is responsible to coordinate, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the nursingÂ
service department as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules andÂ
regulations and guidelines that govern the nursing care facilities. - Maintain a reference library and periodically update to assist the nursing service department inÂ
meeting the day to day needs of the residents. - Develop and maintain methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services toÂ
ensure the continuity of the resident’s total regimen of care - Participate in facility surveys made by authorized government agencies as necessary or asÂ
directed. - Maintain a cooperative and productive relationship with the assigned Clinical ServicesÂ
Coordinator; follow-up and ensure resolution to all identified issues. - Develop action plan for systems issues and quality indicators over threshold and submit to CSCÂ
for review - Collect, review and analyze clinical outcome data and determine trends
- Attend and provide clinical outcome data trends at the QA and A committee meeting monthly.
- Participate in the QA and A Committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans ofÂ
action to correct identified deficiencies. - Assist in planning for resident admissions and discharges.
- Serve on, participate in and attend various committees of the facility as appointed by theÂ
Administrator - Determine and monitor the staffing needs of the nursing department and ensure the assignment of
appropriate and adequate numbers of nursing staff daily for each shift to ensure that the needs ofÂ
the residents are met. - Review annually at a minimum, all nursing services policies and procedures.
- Participate in the interviewing process and select, with the Administrator’s approval, all NursesÂ
and Certified Nursing Assistants. - Ensure yearly written performance evaluation of all nursing staff
- Assist support services in developing, implementing, and conducting in service training programsÂ
that relate to the nursing department. - Ensure that there are adequate supplies for resident care.
- Ensure that medical and nursing care is administered in accordance with the resident’s wishes andÂ
per the individualized care plan. - In coordination with the Administrator, prepare, plan and adhere to the nursing services budget.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information
- Ensure residents are treated with dignity and respect and resident rights are maintained
Maintains a liaison with the residents, their families and support departments to adequately planÂ
for the resident’s needsÂ
Daily responsibilities
- Attend daily department head and facilitate clinical meeting; lead and focus nursing managementÂ
staff in resolving identified resident care and services concerns - Conduct nursing unit rounds at least twice daily during tour of duty; assign licensed nurse toÂ
resolve any observed/identified issues. - Ensure adequate staffing is maintained per budgeted parameters
- Review any and all resident/staff events and grievances, ensure investigations are conducted asÂ
indicated and protocols are followed - Promptly review resident referrals for admission as they arise during the day
- Assist in the admission and discharge process.
- Manage the daily resident and family concerns as required for the Nursing department
- Ensure physician and family notification, care plan review and revision is accomplished for allÂ
identified resident changes in condition - Assume Administrative duties in the absence of the Administrator
Weekly Responsibilities:
- Report weekly key quality indicators to assigned regional Clinical Services Coordinator orÂ
regional representative. - Ensure that resident “At Risk” meetings are being conducted; attend periodically to ensure processÂ
is followed and appropriate plan for resolution is attained. - Attend care planning meetings to ensure that all team members are participating, reviewingÂ
resident care issues and needs and appropriate plan for resolution is attained. - Meet with nursing management staff and communicate necessary focus of attention as identifiedÂ
by observations during unit rounds, meeting attendance and reported resident care issues. PlanÂ
strategies and set goals for the week. - Review all Consultant reports and recommendations and ensure follow-up to identified issues.
- Develop and work action plan to resolve identified issues by CSC.
- Visit with all new admissions and if possible their families.
- Review with Medical Director all resident incidents/accidents, ensure signature on reports.
- Review all other resident care issues with Medical Director as indicated.
- Attend various meetings, PPS, Department Head, care planning, discharge, unit meetings, etc
- Attend wound care rounds at least weekly with the Wound Nurse of the facility.
- Interview and hire appropriate nursing personnel as needed
- Maintain established nursing budget
Monthly Responsibilities:
- Participate in and report clinical outcome data trends and plan of action for resolution at the QAÂ
and A Committee meeting - Attend Safety committee
- Attend and participate in the Administrator/Director of Nursing meetings scheduled by theÂ
regional team. - Conduct nursing staff meetings on each shift and communicate all pertinent information
- Participate in the “Night Owl” program, week end manager program and all other customerÂ
service programs. - Maintain established nursing budget
Annual responsibilities:
- Review all Nursing policy and procedures and ensure review and approval by the MedicalÂ
Director and Administrator - Complete and provide written evaluations for all nursing staff.
- Participate in the annual business planning for your center
- Maintain established nursing budget.
