Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment!  

At Jockey Hollow, there are 212 pristine acres to explore and enjoy. With a large "L"-shaped swimming pool, Low Ropes Challenge Course and Zip Line, beautiful equestrian center, archery range, playing field, and adventurous hiking trails, the fun is endless!  

The Athletics Specialist will develop and implement an age-appropriate athletics curriculum to educate and inspire campers to participate in a variety of sports-related activities at camp and guide campers through a variety of activities including but not limited to basketball, pickleball, gaga, and field games. 

Immediate Supervisor: Program Director 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Develop and implement an age-appropriate athletics curriculum  
  • Activity areas include but are not limited to:  basketball, pickleball, gaga, and field games 
  • Maintain strict safety procedures set forth by GSNNJ 
  • Attend pre-camp training and conduct training to encourage staff to participate during athletic activities 
  • Maintain communication with Unit Leaders, Counselors, and Junior Counselors regarding camper behavior and supervision 
  • Instruct and facilitate a group of up to 20 girls, providing fun, informative, and skill building athletic games and activities 
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise special programs for Special Interest Day 
  • Assist in planning and leading games and campfire program for all 3 overnights until 9:30 pm 
  • Keep a supply of appropriate rainy day activity resources available 
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of sports equipment and shed 
  • Conduct safety orientation of equipment and safety procedures 
  • Provide resources for unit staff to develop unit projects, lessons, and programs 
  • Maintain files of ideas and directions of athletic programs 
  • Write and submit a seasonal report and evaluation of the season's athletic program activities 
  • Promote high camper and staff morale 
  • Document and diligently report any health and welfare concerns to the Camp Health Supervisor 
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights 
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights not staying overnight for 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Daily Rate: $123 (new staff) - $128 per day (returning staff). This is based on a 7.5 hour work day, which translates to $16.40 - $17.07 per hour respectively.  

Requirements

  •  Must be 18+ years of age 
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with other staff in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere 
  • Ability to teach skills to campers of all ages and staff in a safe, inclusive, enthusiastic, and fun way 
  • Ability to use sound judgement surrounding safety procedures 
  • Must be attentive and timely 
  • Regularly speak, read, write, interpret, and respond to words in the English language 
  • Must be able to communicate well with other staff and community partners 
  • Ability to schedule and develop a program for athletics   
  • Knowledge of the sports (including but not limited to basketball and pickleball), 
  • Knowledge of Girl Scouting, leadership skills, and proven instructional experience.   
  • Individuals must be in physical condition to perform duties.  
  • Hold or be willing to obtain current certification of standard First Aid and CPR (training to be provided). 

Physical Requirements 

  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds. 
  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
