As a Senior Mechanic, you’ll play a critical role in keeping our terminal operations running safely and efficiently. You’ll use your expertise to diagnose complex equipment issues, perform advanced repairs, and keep our heavy machinery operating at its best. This is an opportunity to put your technical skills to work, take on challenging repairs, and serve as a go-to resource and mentor for the maintenance team.

 

The Senior Mechanic will diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel-related issues; perform preventative and corrective maintenance; and assist with training and guiding other mechanics. The ideal candidate has strong experience working with heavy equipment and is comfortable working in a fast-paced industrial, terminal, or port environment.

Responsibilities

What your days look like as a Sr. Mechanic:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy mobile equipment and terminal equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, braking systems, and other mechanical components.
  • Diagnose equipment problems using diagnostic tools, service manuals, schematics, and technical resources.
  • Perform engine repairs, rebuilds, and component replacements as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, hoses, and related components.
  • Diagnose electrical and electronic systems, including wiring, sensors, starters, alternators, and control systems.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications when required.
  • Conduct inspections and identify potential equipment failures or safety concerns before they result in downtime.
  • Complete preventative maintenance according to established schedules and manufacturer specifications.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and prioritize repairs based on operational needs and safety.
  • Document repairs, parts used, labor hours, and equipment conditions accurately.
  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to mechanics and maintenance personnel.
  • Assist with training less-experienced mechanics on equipment, troubleshooting techniques, and safe work practices.
  • Review completed repairs to ensure work meets quality and safety standards.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair needs, and potential issues to the Maintenance Manager or Supervisor.
  • Work closely with operations personnel to minimize equipment downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, environmental regulations, and equipment manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To succeed as a Sr. Mechanic you must have:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of5 years of experience in heavy equipment, diesel mechanics, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment.
  • Experience with hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and computerized maintenance systems.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Experience with cranes, reach stackers, forklifts, loaders, excavators, terminal tractors, or other heavy mobile equipment preferred.
  • Experience in a port, terminal, transportation, construction, industrial, or similar environment preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC card

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to identify the root cause of equipment failures and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple repair requests in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical direction to other mechanics.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins as operationally required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in an industrial environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in confined or elevated areas.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work around heavy machinery, moving equipment, noise, dust, grease, oils, and other industrial conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate required tools and equipment.
