Job DetailsJob Location: BRYSON CITY, NC 28713Position Type: RegularDivision/Department: Maintenance Of Way Job Title: Laborer Reports To: Track Supervisor  Type of position: Non-Exempt / Hourly  Employee Classification: Regular Location: Dillsboro, NC (various locations along GSMR track line) Compensation: $17-24 hr., DOE, and Certification(s) Job Summary: Lay, repair and maintain track and bridges for standard gauge railroad equipment used in regular railroad service or plant yards.   Benefits Offered: The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers a comprehensive Medical/Rx, dental and vision package with company-funded H.S.A. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Ability to operate or willingness to learn track related equipment. Ability to operate and use related tools such as chain saws, pole saws, and rail saws.   Assists in performing all phases of railroad track and bridgework.    Responsible for instating and ensuring compliance to a track equipment and highway vehicle preventative maintenance program.   Performs or assists with hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance as necessary to track equipment and MOW department highway vehicles.   Strict compliance to GSMR procedures/rules, roadway worker safety program and operating rules. Work as needed and perform all other duties as assigned Work Environment: Work on and off the train in varied terrain in all weather during daylight and dark hours.  Must be available for duty: weekends, nights, and off hours in the event of track emergencies and/or special or emergency inspections. Ability to perform continuous heavy labor in all weather conditions. Varied schedule throughout the year dictated by train schedule and maintenance operations.  Schedule is typically Monday thru Thursday 10-hour days with rotating on-call weekends.  QualificationsEducation, Skill and Work Experience Requirements: Valid US Driver's License required CDL and valid DOT medical card (or the ability to obtain one) preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English. Must be able to interact effectively with coworkers and customers. Must be able to pass a background check and DMV record check. Must be able to lift 50lbs repetitively.  Pre-Employment & Random Drug Testing program in compliance with company policy. Must pass pre-employment fit for duty physical evaluation.  Ability to work closely with others and be able to comprehend and carry out complex tasks. Experience with operation and repair of hand and power tools as well as tractors or heavy equipment preferred. Experience with routine servicing and maintenance of off and on-road vehicles and equipment, preferred. Experience with working safely with crew members as a team.
