Sonic Summary

info
  • The Academic Coach at Mansfield Hall supports neurodivergent college students in building essential skills for academic success.
  • This role requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and at least one year of experience in academic tutoring or mentoring.
  • Coaches provide individualized support, helping students with executive functioning skills and academic responsibilities.
  • The position offers a salary in the range of $40,000 to $50,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills and the ability to foster trusting relationships with students.

What We're Building

Mansfield Hall is a living and learning community for neurodivergent college students, students who are capable of college but not yet fully ready for total independence. We organize the work around four areas: Living (independent living skills), Learning (academic and executive functioning), Giving (community involvement), and Engaging (social and emotional growth). Coaches are how all four of those actually happen. Not in a classroom, in the moment, every day.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Deliver individualized academic coaching, tutoring, and direct support to students with diverse learning needs
  • Facilitate daily Structured Study Time, helping students organize assignments and manage deadlines
  • Meet one on one with students regularly to assess progress and adjust strategies
  • Strengthen student skills in organization, time management, project planning, and study habits
  • Monitor academic indicators such as attendance, grades, and course difficulty
  • Connect students with tutoring centers, libraries, and accessibility services
  • Guide goal setting across academics, social development, and independent living
  • Maintain accurate documentation and collaborate with Academic Directors, other Academic Coaches, and Student Life staff

Why This Might Not Be the Job for You

  • You'd rather complete tasks for students than coach them through doing it themselves
  • You get frustrated when progress is gradual. Executive functioning growth is slow and non-linear, and some weeks look like no progress at all
  • You want a highly predictable workday
  • You're uncomfortable giving clear, direct feedback
  • You see coaching mainly as homework help rather than teaching a student to manage their own workload

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences, education, psychology, social work, human services, or a related field
  • At least one year of experience in academic tutoring, coaching, or mentoring
  • A working understanding of what college actually demands of students day to day
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to manage multiple students, deadlines, and priorities at once
  • A belief that students are capable, and a habit of balancing empathy with accountability

Compensation & Benefits

This role pays $22/hr. Alongside your hourly wage, full-time coaches at Mansfield Hall also receive:

  • Medical insurance, with the premium cost shared between Mansfield Hall and the employee, plus an HSA option
  • Employer-funded wellness dollars
  • Free meals and drinks during your shift
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 4% employer match
  • Paid time off, plus paid winter break
  • Disability and life insurance coverage
  • Work expense reimbursement

How We Interview

  2. One to two structured interviews, in person or virtual depending on availability and geographic location
  3. Reference and background checks
  4. An offer
