Accounting Manager

Overview

The Accounting Manager is responsible for comprehensive oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, close processes, and payroll operations within a growing, private-equity-backed professional services organization. This is a high-impact role with significant growth opportunity—you'll lead process improvement initiatives, own systems optimization, and partner with leadership on financial accuracy and strategic reporting. The Manager works closely with the Director and executive team to strengthen transactional controls, drive automation, and support clean financial reporting. This role offers the ideal platform to develop into a senior finance leadership position.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Oversee end-to-end AP processes, including invoice processing, payment runs, and vendor management including discrepancy resolution
  • Lead vendor reconciliation programs, maintain W-9s and 1099 documentation
  • Establish and maintain approval workflows and segregation of duties
  • Support weekly cash disbursement planning and forecasting

Accounts Receivable, Billing & Collections

  • Lead AR operations and collections strategy to optimize cash flow
  • Oversee invoice preparation, billing cycle management, and client invoicing accuracy
  • Develop and maintain AR aging reports and collections follow-up procedures
  • Partner with project management to ensure accurate, timely project billing
  • Monitor and resolve billing discrepancies and revenue-related issues

General Ledger & Financial Close

  • Own monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and adjustments
  • Develop and maintain balance sheet reconciliation schedules (AP, AR, prepaid, accruals, debt, equity, etc.)
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and consistency in accounting policies and procedures
  • Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and audit packages
  • Partner with external auditors on audit planning, testing, and remediation

Payroll Operations (BambooHR)

  • Oversee all payroll processing, tax withholding, and compliance using BambooHR platform
  • Manage payroll reconciliations, tax filings, and general ledger accounting
  • Maintain payroll records, I-9 documentation, and employee tax files
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to third parties (payroll providers, tax agencies)
  • Stay current on payroll regulatory changes and implement necessary adjustments

Systems, Process Improvement & Automation

  • Lead system configuration, optimization, and process standardization
  • Identify manual processes and develop business cases for automation and system enhancements
  • Document accounting processes and controls; develop procedure playbooks for consistency and knowledge transfer
  • Support ERP transition to Deltek with clean processes and accurate GL configuration
  • Collaborate with IT on system upgrades, data migration, integrations, and automation initiatives
  • Manage special projects supporting finance transformation and system transitions

M&A Integration & Growth Opportunity

  • Lead accounting function contributions to post-acquisition consolidation and integration activities
  • Develop reconciliation and consolidation processes for acquired entities (e.g., Brownstone)
  • Identify opportunities to standardize and streamline processes across multiple entities
  • Support financial due diligence for future M&A activities
  • Growth Path: As you develop in this role, you'll take on increasingly strategic M&A responsibilities, positioning you for senior finance leadership roles.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and develop junior accounting staff
  • Establish clear expectations, workflows, and accountability measures
  • Provide hands-on coaching and performance feedback
  • Delegate effectively to build team capacity and capabilities

Qualifications (Required)

  • 3–5+ years of Big 4 public accounting experience (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) or equivalent professional services firm background
  • Hands-on expertise in Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger accounting
  • Month-end and year-end close process participation and support
  • Payroll accounting experience – including processing, reconciliation, tax compliance, and payroll-to-GL accounting
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and audit-ready mindset
  • Experience with Deltek a plus
  • Strong Excel, Word, and PowerPoint proficiency
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated process improvement mindset – ability to identify inefficiencies and propose automation solutions
  • Growth mindset and leadership potential – ready to step into a manager role with mentorship

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $110,000–$130,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, demonstrated impact, and growth trajectory. Competitive for Boston market, with performance-based increases tied to impact and development.
