Job Summary
Â
This is a position within the Public Works Department with a wide variety of duties pertaining to vehicle/equipment operation and maintenance of roads, streets, storm sewers, bridges and drainage structures within Boone County as well as a variety of duties pertaining to the Public Works compound and stockyard.Â
Â
The Public Services Operator I must obtain the ability to operate power tools, vehicles and equipment, as well as, perform manual tasks as assigned by a Public Services Road Crew Leader, Public Services Supervisor and/or office personnel. Â
Major Essential Duties
- Perform the duties of the Public Services Road Crew Leader in their absenceÂ
- Assist Public Services Road Crew Leader with general maintenance of County right-of-ways, roads and storm sewer systems including on the job training as neededÂ
- Assist with the servicing and maintenance of equipment and tools used by Public Services Road CrewsÂ
- Operate vehicles, trucks and equipment as needed for construction work, street maintenance, and hauling of materialsÂ
- Assist with loading/unloading of materials as neededÂ
- Assist with delivery/pick-up of equipment as neededÂ
- Assist Public Services Supervisor with material inventoryÂ
- Assist Solid Waste Services with handling of solid waste materials/recyclablesÂ
- Coordinate service for loaders/equipment as neededÂ
- Manage cleanliness of Public Works’ compound, stockyard and stockpilesÂ
- Assist the Public Services Crew Leader to ensure Public Works is OSHA compliantÂ
- On call 24/7 to assist Boone County Dispatch with emergenciesÂ
Minor Essential Duties
- Assist with the Department’s snow removal operationsÂ
- Perform other duties as assignedÂ

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise Public Services Road Crews including:Â
- Assist with hiring, training, development and work assignments.Â
- Evaluate job performance.Â
- Provide complaint and problem resolution.Â
- Enforce policies and procedures.Â

Relationships
- The Public Services Operator I performs duties within the Public Works Department, under the direct of a Public Services Crew Leader or the supervision of the Public Services SupervisorÂ
Requirements
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
Â
- Graduate of a standard high school, vocational school or the equivalency, supplemented by experience or training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties in the Public Services DivisionÂ
- Advance Experience with Excavation and Paving Equipment
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, professional publications, and governmental regulations Â
- Possess strong oral, written and listening skillsÂ
- Ability to handle sensitive issuesÂ
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions and decimalsÂ
- Ability to compute ratio and percent
Reasoning Skills
- Define problems, collect data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusionsÂ
- Interpret a variety of technical and instructional informationÂ
- Make decisions which serve the county’s best interests and follows the missions and objectives of the Public Works DepartmentÂ
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver’s licenseÂ
- Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky Class A commercial driver’s license
- Must possess or obtain OSHA 30 certification within the first 6 monthsÂ
- Must possess or obtain CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens training within the first 6 monthsÂ
- Must obtain ALL Equipment training certificates within the first 6 monthsÂ
- Must possess or obtain the following NIMS Training certifications within the first 6 months:Â
- ICS-100: Introduction to Incident Command SystemÂ
- IS-700: Introduction to the National Incident ManageÂ
Other Knowledge and/or Skills
- Basic computer skills with ability to access programs such as but not limited to Microsoft Office products. Â
- Experience and knowledge of materials and equipment related to the Public Works operationsÂ
- Ability to work with other department, county, other agency personnel and the general publicÂ
- Ability to work under limited supervisionÂ
